TV-Series
Description
Fuhrer King Bradley is the leader of the Amestrian State Military in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, holding the highest political and military authority in the country of Amestris. Publicly, he is presented as a stern but charismatic commander-in-chief respected by his subordinates. In truth, he is one of the seven Homunculi, artificial beings created from the sins of a powerful entity known as Father. In the universe of the manga and the 2009 anime reboot, Bradley embodies the sin of Wrath, serving as a primary antagonist.
Bradley’s origin is unique among his kind. Unlike other Homunculi who were born directly from Father, Bradley was originally a human orphan. He was one of hundreds of abandoned children raised from infancy in a secret government program designed to create the perfect ruler. These candidates, known only by numbers, were rigorously trained in politics, military strategy, and swordsmanship. Upon reaching their physical peak, they were injected with a Philosopher's Stone imbued with Father's wrath. Bradley, designated Candidate Number Twelve, was the sole survivor of this process; his powerful human soul fought against and drained the countless souls within the stone, allowing him to retain his human consciousness and identity. As a result, he was given the name King Bradley and remains the only Homunculus who naturally ages over time.
In terms of personality, Bradley presents a complex facade. In public and during peacetime, he often appears as a calm, easygoing, and even somewhat eccentric individual. He is known for making flippant remarks, escaping his official duties by jumping out of windows, and engaging in behaviors unbecoming of his high rank, such as joking with subordinates or dressing as a tourist. This lighthearted mask, however, conceals a ruthless and pragmatic core. As the embodiment of Wrath, he possesses a deep-seated fury and a cold, calculating nature that surfaces in battle. He views humans as weak and disposable tools necessary for the grand plan, yet his former humanity grants him a richer emotional range than other Homunculi, allowing him to genuinely appreciate art, strategy, and the rare act of free will, such as choosing his own wife.
Bradley’s primary motivation is to serve Father and ensure the success of the plan to create a nationwide Transmutation Circle on the "Promised Day," an event meant to allow Father to absorb the energy of everyone in the country and ascend to godhood. To achieve this, Bradley uses his absolute authority as Fuhrer to orchestrate wars, like the genocidal Ishval Civil War, to create Philosopher's Stones and carve the transmutation array into the land. He personally ensures the Elric brothers, Roy Mustang, and other potential human sacrifices remain alive and within his grasp, often using threats against their loved ones, such as Winry Rockbell or Riza Hawkeye, to control them.
Bradley maintains several key relationships that define his role. He is the loyal, albeit autonomous, servant of "Father," the dwarf in the flask who created him. His adopted son, Selim Bradley, is secretly Pride, the eldest and most powerful Homunculus, assigned to watch over and support him. Despite his inhuman nature, he holds genuine affection for his human wife, Mrs. Bradley, often stating that choosing her was the only truly free decision he ever made. His relationship with his subordinates and enemies is defined by a profound respect for strength and resolve, often showing a twisted sense of camaraderie towards worthy opponents like Scar.
Throughout the story, Bradley acts as the seemingly invincible enforcer of the Homunculi's will. He personally leads assaults on the chimeras at the Devil's Nest, effortlessly defeats the Homunculus Greed, and turns the tables on multiple assassination attempts. His character develops not through a change in allegiance, but through a revelation of his hidden depths. While he never betrays Father, he displays a growing satisfaction in fighting for his own sake rather than merely following orders. In his final battle, he admits he enjoyed the chaos of battle and the choices he made as a leader and a husband, accepting his death with a sense of peaceful defiance.
Bradley’s combat abilities are extraordinary and make him one of the most dangerous characters in the series. He wields two sabers with superhuman speed and precision, capable of slicing through a tank, cutting gunfire, and defeating multiple soldiers simultaneously. His primary asset is his "Ultimate Eye," a clairvoyant ability that allows him to perceive the flow of energy in any object or person, effectively letting him predict attacks and find the optimal moment to strike. Unlike other Homunculi, Bradley cannot regenerate from injuries because his single Philosopher's Stone is contained entirely within his body without the external core that powers others. He compensates for this lack of regeneration with incredible agility, endurance, and ferocity, continuing to fight at full capacity even while bleeding profusely from fatal wounds.
