Description
Myst-Burn, also known as Mystvearn or simply Myst, is a major antagonist in the anime and manga series Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken. He initially appears as the commander of the Shadow Legion, holding the title of Shadow Vizier within the Dark Army of the Great Demon King Vearn. His background is deeply unusual: he is not a typical living being but a collective of dark aura that gained sentience, a mist-like entity born from the lingering battle spirits of the demon realm. He describes himself as an existence somewhere between a gas lifeform and a ghost. Because he lacks a true physical body, he cannot grow stronger through training, which he resents. His true form is a shadowy mass with a humanoid upper half and multiple writhing lower tendrils, usually hidden beneath a long white robe called the Shadow Raiment. Inside the robe, a pair of glowing eyes and a chest orb are visible.
His role in the story is layered and deceptive. Nominally a subordinate to the Demon King Hadlar, Myst-Burn is in truth Vearn's most trusted and ancient servant. For thousands of years, his primary mission has been to safeguard Vearn's original young body, which was preserved through the Secret Spell of Frozen Time. He wears the Shadow Raiment to conceal the fact that he is constantly merged with this body, acting as Vearn's living vessel and stand-in. He rarely speaks, not because he is incapable, but because uttering Vearn's voice could expose the secret. This enforced silence makes him appear cold and stoic, but beneath the mask he is intensely passionate and quick-tempered. He becomes enraged when his master's secrets are threatened and has been known to act on impulse, such as when he attempted to unleash his full power without permission after his floating fortress was destroyed.
His motivations are rooted in absolute devotion. Vearn gave him a name, a purpose, and a reason to exist, and Myst-Burn repays this with unwavering loyalty. He believes that Vearn's commands take priority over everything else, even his own bonds. This loyalty is his strongest driving force, but it also creates internal conflict, as he often respects and even admires those who achieve strength through effort. He forms a genuine bond of mutual respect with the transformed Hadlar, yet does not hesitate to trigger the Black Core planted inside him when ordered. He displays open contempt for cowards and schemers like Zaboera, while showing admiration for warriors who train and fight courageously, regardless of which side they are on. His relationship with his fellow servant Killvearn is surprisingly warm; despite their opposite methods, they become close friends who call each other by abbreviated names.
Myst-Burn is also the dark mentor of Hyunckel, the undead knight. He saved Hyunckel as a child and taught him how to wield dark aura, always with the hidden intention of one day claiming Hyunckel's body as a new vessel. This teacher-student relationship is cold and pragmatic, but it forms the basis of their final confrontation.
In combat, Myst-Burn is a formidable opponent. While wearing the Shadow Raiment, he can use techniques such as Dark Puppetry Aura Hand to restrain enemies, Dark Aura Decimation Field to unleash a devastating area attack, and Byut Deathstringer, a long-range piercing strike with his clawed gauntlets. He can also absorb incoming spells and amplify them before reflecting them back. When he removes the Shadow Raiment, revealing that he is wearing Vearn's young body, his power increases dramatically. The Frozen Time spell makes that body nearly invulnerable to all attacks except the Grand Dispel spell Medroa, and he gains access to incredible physical strength and Vearn's own Phoenix Wing technique. His one weakness is light aura, which can damage his true mist body directly.
Over the course of the story, Myst-Burn develops from a silent, mysterious figure into a more openly expressive antagonist. He shows moments of melancholy, particularly when discussing his own nature as a being that can only borrow the strength of others. In the final battle, after returning Vearn's body to its rightful owner, he attempts to possess Hyunckel as a new host. However, Hyunckel's soul has been saturated with light aura, and the moment Myst enters his consciousness, the light consumes him entirely. He disappears calling Hyunckel's name, meeting an end that is both a defeat and a fulfillment of his long-held desire to be inside the body he had spent years preparing.
