Description
Jin Kamishina is an eighteen-year-old male and the central protagonist of his narrative. His life was irrevocably altered two years before the story begins when a space shuttle accident resulted in the deaths of his parents and younger sister. Jin emerged as the sole survivor of the catastrophe, and he did so without any major injuries despite falling from a great height, a fact that has fed into his mysterious and isolated circumstances. The incident led to his father, the shuttle's pilot, being posthumously blamed for the accident, adding a layer of public stigma to Jin’s profound personal loss.
As a result of this trauma, Jin lives a solitary and withdrawn existence. He is shunned by others and feels completely alone in the world, having spent two years without forming a meaningful connection with anyone. This lonely and somewhat melancholic disposition defines his early character; he is an emotional and at times seemingly whiny individual, a portrayal that has been noted as initially difficult to warm to by some observers. His life changes dramatically when he encounters Toa, a mysterious girl who saves him from a deadly creature. Toa becomes the first person in two years with whom he establishes a genuine bond.
The nature of their connection is a core part of Jin’s identity. It is gradually revealed that Toa was both the cause of the shuttle accident and the one who saved Jin from death during the fall. During this event, a successful Resonance occurred between them, a process that forms a powerful link between a human and a dragon. Even after learning that Toa is responsible for the tragedy that killed his family, Jin chooses to continue protecting her, finding within himself a capacity for forgiveness and love that reshapes his motivations. His feelings for Toa develop into a romantic relationship, and he becomes driven to save her when she is endangered, even going so far as to travel to Mars to rescue her.
Jin’s role in the story is that of an involuntary participant drawn into a larger conflict. After his encounter with Toa, he becomes entangled with the International Solarsystem Development Agency and the efforts to combat dragons from the asteroid Thanatos. He steals a dragon named Gio, who was originally partnered with his old friend Kazuki Tachibana, in an effort to save Toa, an act that creates a lasting rift between him and Kazuki. This conflict with his former friend is a significant part of his personal journey. The relationship with Gio is also key, as the dragon initially exists as a rival for Toa’s affection but ultimately encourages Jin to fulfill his promise to protect her, leading to their partnership.
Throughout the series, Jin undergoes notable development, transitioning from a lonely and passive survivor to a more determined and active protector. Early on, he is often saved by the powerful dragons around him, with one director’s comment even suggesting that Jin functions as the heroine and Toa as the hero in their dynamic. However, he eventually grows into his role, actualizing with Gio to fight as a Dragonaut and becoming less annoying as he matures. His ultimate act of development involves learning that Toa is about to die and accepting a profound resolution proposed by Gio to fuse together into a being called Thanatos, demonstrating his complete acceptance of his bond with both Toa and Gio. A manga version of the character presents a drastically different personality, portraying him as cold-hearted and vengeful after his family is killed in a dragon invasion, showing no mercy to the creatures that destroyed his home.
Jin’s notable abilities are intrinsically linked to his status as a Dragonaut. His power derives from the Resonance he shares with Toa, which predates the main narrative. When he actualizes with his dragon partner, he gains the ability to fight on an immense scale. While his partner possesses formidable abilities, including energy beams that can destroy large targets and the capacity for space flight, Jin himself is largely a normal human in terms of physical capabilities. His true ability lies in piloting and forming the emotional and mystical connection required to unleash his dragon’s full power in combat situations.
