Description
Azanael is a central figure in the narrative as a primary antagonist, an Arume alien who serves as the chief of the unmanned fighter aircraft unit aboard the battleship Novaal. She is identifiable by her pink hair and gray or purple eyes, and her past holds significant weight, as she was once the lover of a fellow Arume named Onomil. The tragedy that defines the story is the death of Onomil in an accident on Kamioki Island several years before the main events, an incident for which Azanael initially holds Commander Senkouji Hagino responsible.
Driven by a cold and calculating nature, Azanael is fiercely determined and willing to go to great lengths to achieve her goal of avenging her lost love. Her personality is marked by a deep, bitter grief that fuels her actions, making her appear ruthless and irrational in her quest for retribution. She is highly strategic and independent, often acting on her own initiative and using her intelligence to plan and execute attacks. Her primary role in the story is to serve as an internal threat to the crew of the Blue, as her obsession with revenge leads her to sabotage and spy on Hagino and her human allies. After being captured by the Blue, she is treated more as a guest than a prisoner by Hagino, who feels a sense of guilt over Onomil's death. However, Azanael uses this leniency to continue her machinations, planting traps and ultimately manipulating Mari Wakatake, the human girl under Hagino's protection, by revealing painful truths about the Kamioki Island disaster.
Key relationships are the driving force behind Azanael's actions. Her bond with Onomil is the most significant, and her inability to accept the loss defines her entire arc. Her relationship with Hagino is one of deep-seated hatred and blame, though this is later complicated by the revelation of the true culprit. She also has a notable dynamic with Tsubael, another crew member of the Blue, who eventually becomes something of a friendly rival. Azanael's development is one of the most significant turning points in the plot. She eventually discovers that the accident on Kamioki Island was not an accident at all but a deliberate act orchestrated by a superior officer, Shivariel, who wished to test a new weapon, the Thought Condensing Weapon, on both Arume and humans. Upon learning that Shivariel was directly responsible for Onomil's death, Azanael's focus shifts entirely. She attempts to assassinate Shivariel, an act that brands her a traitor and forces her to flee for her life. During her escape, she is cornered and severely wounded by guards, only to survive thanks to a failsafe left behind by Onomil, a pendant that activates her fighter craft. In her final act, Azanael overcomes her vendetta and flies her ship to the aid of the Blue in its desperate battle against the Novaal, seizing control of the unmanned fighters to help her former enemy. In the final scene set thirty years later, she appears only as a voice, now serving as a pilot for a护卫机, indicating she survived the war and found a new purpose.
Notable abilities possessed by Azanael include her strategic mind and her skill as a pilot and commander of fighter units. She is also shown to be proficient in the use of Arume technology, including the manipulation of the powerful energy source known as The Pillar. Her tactical knowledge and piloting expertise make her a formidable opponent, capable of escaping a heavily guarded battleship and later turning the tide of a major engagement.
