Description
Hake is a male Inukami who serves as the personal companion to the head of the Kawahira family. He has purple eyes and purple hair that reaches his neck, presenting the appearance of an adult. His birthday is November 2. His contract item, which symbolizes the bond with his master, takes the form of the decorative beads he wears. A notable and somewhat unusual weakness for an Inukami is that he is susceptible to fleas. He is also identified as the older brother of another Inukami named Sendan.
Hake entered into a contract with the head of the Kawahira family when she was around the same age as her grandson, Keita. This pact was made on a Non-contract day, which happened to be the woman's birthday, fifty years before the main events of the story. Hake himself stated that his motivation for forming the contract was born from being bored with his eternal and uneventful life. The story of their meeting reveals that the future head of the family, a determined young girl, had come to the Inukami's mountain seeking a partner to help her fight a death god. After she left the mountain with no one willing to join her, Hake followed. He was moved by her unwavering determination, her vow to become an ally of justice, and her willingness to charge into a hopeless battle. Seeing this, he decided to join her cause, asking for the purple beads she wore as his contract item, and promised to serve her wherever she went if she could relieve him of his eternal boredom.
In his role within the Kawahira family, Hake is the one who assigns most of the missions to the other Inukami and their tamers. His relationship with his master, Keita's grandmother, is one of deep and long-standing devotion. A flashback to their first battle together shows Hake protecting her from a death god's attack, after which she continued to fight with incredible resilience. Over the course of fifty years, they have shared many happy times, though Hake contemplates the sadness inherent in the fact that humans have such short lifespans compared to Inukami. He recognizes that the time for them to be separated will eventually come. Despite this, he smiles at his master's characteristic energy, noting the resemblance between her youthful spirit in her old age and the determined girl he first met. He also observes the resemblance between his master's youthful recklessness and her grandson Keita, acknowledging the similarity in their crude and foolhardy natures with a knowing smile.
Hake's role extends to overseeing younger family members, such as when he appears at Keita's apartment to deliver an invitation to his grandmother's birthday party and later intervenes to calm the Inukami Yoko, explaining that another Inukami's visit was only temporary and meant to be helpful. Through his past actions and present demeanor, Hake demonstrates a personality that has evolved from one of ancient boredom to a state of engaged loyalty and quiet affection for his master, accepting the inevitable sadness of her shorter human lifespan as the price for ending his uneventful eternity.
