Description
Akio Furukawa is the father of Nagisa Furukawa and the husband of Sanae Furukawa, with whom he runs the Furukawa Bakery. Physically, he is 175 centimeters tall and has a youthful appearance, to the extent that he is often mistaken for being much younger than his actual age. He has short red hair with two distinct antenna-like strands and amber eyes, and he is almost always seen with a cigarette in his mouth. His typical attire includes casual clothes or an apron while working in the bakery.
In terms of personality, Akio is loud, boisterous, and brimming with an almost childlike energy. He is known for his rough and playful manner of speaking, which can make him seem intimidating at first, but this exterior masks a deeply kind, sympathetic, and caring nature. He is fiercely protective of his family, and his love for them is the driving force behind most of his actions. Akio has a great sense of humor and enjoys playing practical jokes, with his most famous routine being the teasing of his wife Sanae about her notoriously terrible cooking. Their comedic banter, which always ends with him chasing after her while proclaiming his love for her bread, is a well-known sight in the town. In his free time, he loves to play baseball with the local children in the small park next to his bakery and is also an avid collector of Gundam models.
Before becoming a baker, Akio was a passionate and talented stage actor. However, he and his wife, who was a school teacher, made the difficult decision to abandon their respective career dreams. This choice was prompted by a traumatic incident when their daughter Nagisa was five years old. Because both parents were often away working, Nagisa would wait for them outside. One winter day, she collapsed in the snow from a high fever and was on the verge of death. After this near-tragedy, Akio and Sanae decided to prioritize their daughter above all else. They opened the bakery so they could always be close to home, dedicating their lives to ensuring Nagisa’s happiness and health. As Akio famously states, a parent's dream is for their child to achieve their own dreams.
Within the story, Akio serves as a pillar of support and a source of both comic relief and profound wisdom. His home and bakery become a safe haven, not only for Nagisa but also for the protagonist, Tomoya Okazaki. He acts as a surrogate father figure for Tomoya, who has a strained relationship with his own father, offering him guidance, employment at the bakery after graduation, and a place to live. Akio’s relationship with Tomoya is dynamic; it starts with suspicion and rough teasing but deepens into mutual respect and affection, with Akio ultimately approving of Tomoya’s marriage to Nagisa only after a symbolic test of his resolve through a baseball challenge.
His most significant moments are often during crises. When Nagisa loses her confidence and freezes on stage during the school festival, it is Akio who bursts into the auditorium and delivers a passionate, life-changing speech that gives her the courage to fulfill her dream. In the aftermath of Nagisa’s death, he and Sanae selflessly take on the role of raising their granddaughter, Ushio, for the first five years of her life, providing her with a loving and stable environment until Tomoya is ready to be a father again. He is known to his granddaughter as Akki, his preferred affectionate nickname.
Notable abilities and traits include his impressive physical strength and athletic skill, particularly in baseball, where he is shown to be an exceptionally talented pitcher and hitter. He is also a capable baker, as he is the one who actually produces the bread that the shop sells, while his wife’s attempts are used for comedic effect. Despite his often loud and reckless demeanor, he possesses a quiet, contemplative side and a deep well of emotional resilience, allowing him to make tremendous personal sacrifices for the well-being of those he loves without a trace of regret.
