Description
Mr Li, whose full name is Li Jian-Qiang, is a supporting character in the anime Angel Heart. He is the leader of the Zheng Dao Hui, a powerful Taiwanese crime syndicate, and the biological father of the main protagonist, Xiang Ying. His background is marked by a deep personal tragedy. When Xiang Ying was two years old, she and her mother were involved in a severe car accident that plunged their vehicle off a cliff into a river. The mother was killed, but Xiang Ying was never found despite a thorough search by her father and his organization. Unbeknownst to Mr Li, his daughter was rescued and later taken in by a faction within his own syndicate, where she was trained as an assassin.
The circumstances of Mr Li's leadership are complex. It was eventually revealed that while he was believed to be the active head of the Zheng Dao Hui, his twin brother, Li Qian-De, had been the one truly making operational decisions. After his brother's death, Mr Li assumed full leadership. His personality is defined by a profound and enduring sense of guilt. He cannot forgive himself for his daughter being turned into a killer within his own organization, nor can he forget the pain she endured. Though he deeply wishes to be reunited with Xiang Ying, he understands that it is best for her to remain unaware of her true parentage. Accepting this painful reality, he requests that Ryo Saeba take care of her, knowing she can never return to him.
Mr Li's primary motivation is his love for his daughter and his desire to protect her, even if it means staying out of her life. His role in the story is that of a distant, sorrowful father figure who must let go of his child for her own sake. His key relationships are with Xiang Ying, whom he secretly watches over, and with Ryo, to whom he entrusts her care. He is the originator of Xiang Ying's childhood nickname, Ah-Xiang, a fond name that only a few other characters, including Ryo and Kaori, later use. His development involves coming to terms with the loss of his family and accepting that his greatest act of love is stepping aside so his daughter can find a new life and a new family. He demonstrates a notable ability to command the Zheng Dao Hui and shows a deep, quiet resilience in bearing his emotional burdens alone.
