Description
Fumina Konoe is a character who appears as a transfer student in the second season of the anime. She is a quiet and somewhat clueless girl who immediately draws attention due to her striking physical resemblance to Hecate, a powerful and enigmatic member of the Bal Masqué Crimson Denizen organization. Where Hecate has blue hair and eyes, Fumina has green or cyan-colored hair cut to neck length and matching green eyes, and she is of a similar youthful, adolescent build, standing at 142 centimeters tall.
Upon joining the class of Yuji Sakai and Shana, Fumina’s behavior marks her as highly unusual. She is extremely awkward in social situations and displays a surprising lack of basic life skills, apparently unable to perform simple tasks such as changing her clothes or taking books out of her bag without assistance. This helplessness is explained by the fact that she lives in a wealthy household attended by a butler, suggesting a life of being waited on, which has left her unprepared for ordinary school life. Her personality is defined by an innocent, gentle nature, and she shows a particular fondness for birds and butterflies, often becoming distracted by them and wandering away from those around her. She almost never shows a strong will regarding her own situation but demonstrates a kind heart, such as when she sheds tears for an injured classmate.
Her primary motivation and most notable behavior is her immediate and powerful attachment to Yuji Sakai. She clings to him, frequently follows him around, and holds onto his shirt, which creates significant tension and jealousy in Shana, who has developed feelings for Yuji. Shana’s jealousy over the time Yuji spends with Fumina becomes a key point of character development, ultimately pushing her to become closer with her romantic rival, Kazumi Yoshida. For much of the arc, Fumina appears to be a somewhat eccentric but harmless human girl. Shana’s initial suspicion that she might be Hecate in disguise is seemingly disproven when Fumina, unlike a Crimson Denizen, is unable to move within a Fuzetsu and bleeds when injured.
However, Fumina’s role in the story is far more significant than that of a simple transfer student. It is eventually revealed that she is not a real human but an artificial vessel, a faux vessel or alter ego created by Hecate of Bal Masqué. Her entire existence is a strategic maneuver by the Crimson Denizen organization. Her primary purpose is to observe Yuji Sakai, who possesses the Reiji Maigo, a powerful treasure tool that replenishes its owner's Power of Existence at midnight. She is also intended to act as a failsafe, armed with the ability to manifest Hecate's own Treasure Tool, Trigon, to help seal the being known as the Silver if it were to break free. The chain bracelet she wears on her wrist is not a mere accessory but a manifestation of Tartarus, a powerful Treasure Tool that severs the flow of Power of Existence, effectively concealing her true nature from even experienced Flame Hazes like Shana and Margery Daw.
Fumina’s development is tragic and poignant. As she spends more time at school, participating in activities like studying for exams, going to an amusement park, and preparing for the school festival, she begins to genuinely experience human emotions and form real bonds, particularly with Yuji and her classmates. She grows accustomed to school life and becomes close with those around her. Her secondary, unspoken purpose is to collect these very experiences and emotions. When the plan culminates during the school festival, the chain on her bracelet is broken, causing her to revert to her true form. She merges back with Hecate, transferring all the memories and feelings she accumulated during her time as a student.
Despite being a constructed pawn, Fumina’s influence has a profound and lasting effect on her creator. The human emotions, simple joys, and memories of friendship and attachment that Fumina gathered are implanted into Hecate. When Hecate later confronts Yuji and Shana, these lingering feelings cause her to hesitate at a critical moment, her attack going wide. In a moment that reflects Fumina’s personality, Hecate sees Shana leaping into battle and is reminded of the birds Fumina loved to feed in the park. This emotional interference causes Hecate to let go of her weapon, allowing it to be destroyed by Shana. The experience leaves Hecate confused and, for the first time, shedding tears, demonstrating that Fumina was more than a simple decoy; she was a vessel that successfully delivered the gift of genuine emotion to an empty being. In terms of abilities, Fumina herself displays no supernatural powers, but her body serves as a host for powerful Treasure Tools like Tartarus and Trigon, which are activated by the Bal Masqué to manipulate the situation from the shadows.
