Description
Chitose Hibara is the mother of the two central characters, Shizuru and Mizuki, in the anime Mokke. She is an adult woman with brown eyes and gray hair that reaches her neck. Chitose lives apart from her daughters, who reside in the countryside with their grandparents. This arrangement was made because Chitose is unable to cope with the supernatural abilities that her daughters possess, specifically Shizuru's ability to see spirits and Mizuki's tendency to become possessed by them. She is portrayed as a no-nonsense person who has very little tolerance for talk of fantasy, spirits, or youkai.

Her personality is defined by a strong skepticism and a practical, grounded worldview that leaves no room for belief in the supernatural. This creates a significant emotional distance between her and her daughters, who are deeply embedded in a world she cannot accept. Her refusal to acknowledge the spirits that are a daily reality for Shizuru and Mizuki is the primary reason she and her husband placed the girls in the care of her own parents, who are more knowledgeable and accepting of such matters. Chitose appears as a visitor to the family home rather than as a daily presence in her children's lives.

In her role within the story, Chitose serves as a source of tension and a contrasting perspective to the rest of the Hibara family. Her inability to see or believe in spirits places her in opposition to her father, the girls' grandfather, who is an expert in supernatural affairs. This conflict becomes visible during a family dinner when Mizuki mentions a kesaran-pasaran, a good luck spirit she is caring for. Chitose's reaction leads to an awkward silence and, later, a heated argument with her own father, who tries to explain the significance of such beings. Her husband, in contrast, does not seem to mind the supernatural discussions. Despite her difficult personality and the estrangement it has caused, Chitose does not appear to be motivated by malice. Her actions seem driven by a deep-seated fear or strong desire for a normal, practical life, which leads her to reject anything that defies rational explanation. Following a difficult visit, there is a hint of development when Shizuru informs Mizuki that their mother may be willing to return for another weekend, suggesting an attempt to rebuild their fragile family bonds. Chitose possesses no notable supernatural abilities, which is the fundamental source of her disconnect from her daughters and her own parents.
