Description
Donglai Wu, known in Japanese as Go Torai, is a character from Souten no Ken who serves as a notable antagonist. He holds the position of the Number Four Boss within the Honghua Hui, a powerful organized crime syndicate in Shanghai, and hails from Kwangtung Province.

Wu Donglai is defined by a volatile and cruel personality. He is presented as a jumpy and trigger-happy individual, prone to shooting anything that bothers him. His nature is also that of a slovenly womanizer, driven strongly by his jealous and possessive desires. A key element of his character is his physical condition; he suffered severe injuries at the hands of Kenshiro Kasumi, who is known as Yan Wang. These injuries left Wu Donglai confined to a wheelchair, and he is forced to wear a metal contraption with a crank to raise and lower his head.

His primary motivation within the story is rooted in a combination of personal obsession and a thirst for revenge. Wu Donglai covets Yang Meiyu, an actress who is the girlfriend of his rival, Pan Guanglin. His intense jealousy over Meiyu fuels his antagonistic actions against Pan. To this end, he captures Pan Guanglin and holds him in a dungeon, where he subjects him to horrific torture, intending to use him as a key ingredient in a Cantonese dish called Dragon-Tiger Stew. His conflict with Kenshiro is also personal, as the earlier defeat that crippled him creates a deep-seated need for payback.

Wu Donglais role in the story is that of a major obstacle for Kenshiro and a direct threat to Pan Guanglin. He exercises his power as a Honghua Hui boss to put a high price on Yan Wangs head, hiring bounty hunters and assassins like Ling Wang to eliminate him. His actions, specifically the imprisonment and slow torture of Pan, serve as a primary driver for Kenshiros quest, leading to their final confrontation. The key relationship in his narrative is his rivalry with Pan Guanglin, fueled by his obsession with Meiyu, and his violent antagonism towards Kenshiro.

The development of Wu Donglai culminates in his demise. His cruelty and plans ultimately lead to his death when Kenshiro, in the course of saving Pan Guanglin, knocks Wu Donglai into his own large, boiling cauldron. Regarding notable abilities, beyond his cunning and control over criminal resources, Wu Donglai himself does not demonstrate any martial arts mastery. His primary weapons are his position of authority, his ruthlessness, and his use of firearms, not hand-to-hand combat skills. His defining traits are his cruelty and his signature, dangerous response to any perceived irritation, which is to open fire without hesitation.
