Description
Kappeita Taira, known to almost everyone as Capeta, is the main protagonist of his story. His given name is shortened to this nickname, which he goes by for the duration of the narrative. At the start of his journey, he is a ten-year-old boy being raised by his widowed father, Shigei. Having lost his mother at a very young age, Capeta learned to be self-sufficient from childhood, handling nearly all of the housework and appearing as a quiet, well-behaved, and reserved child who tries not to be a burden on his hardworking father.

Capeta’s personality is defined by a cheerful and determined nature. Although he does not complain about his family’s poverty, he is described as a lonely kid with a rough life before discovering racing. Once he gets behind the wheel, his hidden passion and intensity are unleashed. On the track, he is immensely focused, pushing himself past his physical limits to the point of forgetting his own body. In his first informal race, he rubbed his feet raw without noticing the pain, and in a later high-stakes event, he fractured his ribcage while pushing for a win. His sheer determination is so strong that it even motivates his rivals, particularly his main competitor, Naomi, who feels compelled to stay ahead of him.

Capeta’s primary motivation shifts and matures as the story progresses. Initially, he simply discovers a joy and thrill in driving the makeshift go-kart his father builds for him from scrap parts. This joy quickly transforms into a desire to compete, specifically to catch and defeat Naomi Minamoto, a talented and well-funded driver he encounters in his first experience on a track. Seeing Naomi as his greatest rival becomes a central driving force. Over time, this evolves into a deep-seated ambition to become a professional racer, climbing the ranks from karting to Formula Three, with the ultimate, implied goal of reaching Formula One. A significant aspect of his motivation is his desire to succeed for the people who believe in him, including his father and his friends, despite the constant financial struggles that threaten to end his career before it truly begins.

In the story, Capeta serves as the heart of a classic underdog narrative. His role is to demonstrate that raw talent, dedication, and an unbreakable spirit can challenge the established order of a wealthy, professional sport. He begins with a kart literally built from discarded junk and a four-stroke generator engine, yet his innate talent for racing lines, car control, and understanding the machine is evident from his very first lap. His presence on the track forces other characters, from local hotshots to professional team managers, to take notice of a boy who can extract maximum performance from inferior machinery. His journey is not just about winning races, but about overcoming the staggering financial barriers of motorsport, making every victory a triumph against overwhelming odds.

His key relationships are the foundation of his support system. The most important is with his father, Shigei, a man who works tirelessly for a paving company and feels guilt over not being able to provide more for his son. Shigei builds the first kart and consistently supports Capeta’s dream, even after a costly crash in a Formula Stella car threatens to end everything. Their bond is built on mutual sacrifice and love. His two best friends from school, Nobu Andou and Monami Suzuki, are also crucial. Nobu starts as a bully but becomes Capeta’s most loyal technical assistant and manager, dedicating himself to learning the mechanical and strategic side of racing. Monami is an aggressive, forceful, and caring girl who appoints herself as the team’s manager and biggest cheerleader, later pursuing her own dream of becoming a singer while continuing to support the team. His primary rival, Naomi Minamoto, is a serious, talented driver from a works team who never loses and is solely interested in Formula One. After seeing Capeta’s debut, Naomi recognizes him as his rival, creating a mutual, silent respect and a fierce competition that propels both of them forward.

Capeta undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He progresses from a lonely boy who hides his feelings to a passionate and confident young athlete. He ages from ten to fourteen and then to sixteen, with each arc presenting new physical and emotional challenges. He learns to handle the crushing pressure of professional racing, the devastation of a career-threatening mistake, and the complex feelings of rivalry and respect. He moves from driving a homemade kart to winning in the SL Class, then struggles in the ICA Class, suffers a major crash in Formula Stella school, and finally becomes a series winner in Formula Three, proving he belongs on the path to the highest levels of the sport.

Capeta’s notable abilities on the track are exceptional. He possesses incredible adaptability and balance, allowing him to master a poorly built kart instantly. His spatial awareness and car control are phenomenal, demonstrated when he repeatedly catches and tries to pass drivers in superior machinery. He is described as showing brilliance, adaptability, and a natural talent that draws people to his racing. He has an almost supernatural ability to communicate with his kart and push it to its absolute breaking point, often described as driving with his soul to achieve the impossible. He learns to manage a race car’s gears and strategies quickly, becoming one of the fastest students at the Formula Stella Racing School despite having no prior experience with a manual transmission. Ultimately, his greatest ability is his relentless mental fortitude and ability to find speed and performance through sheer willpower, even when his body is failing him.
