Description
Fuku is a supporting character from the second season of the anime, Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure. This character serves as the enigmatic messenger and right-hand assistant to the primary antagonist, Mikeru. Despite a small and unassuming stature, Fuku holds a position of surprising authority, even capable of issuing orders to Mikeru when the situation demands it.
In terms of appearance, Fuku is a small, chibi-like being with a peculiar hybrid form. It has the body of a small, white bird and the head of a young girl with deep pink hair. A small halo floating above its head contributes to an angelic, if unusual, appearance. This form is a transformation, as Fuku often hides its true nature by disguising itself as a normal, realistically drawn white bird kept in a cage in the room of a key character named Mikaru. Fuku is also known for a distinctive vocal tic, frequently ending sentences or laughing with the sound "Pupupu".
Fuku's personality is marked by a sharp contrast between its cute exterior and its shrewd, manipulative, and arrogant nature. It is talkative, taunting, and often described as annoying by other servants, a trait that frequently leads to the character being physically swatted, thrown, or burned by its allies. Fuku harbors a particular contempt for the Black Beauty Sisters, a duo of subordinate villains, and delights in calling them failures. The character is also shown to be nervous and easily startled, especially regarding the secret of Mikeru's true nature, which Fuku is one of the few to know.
The core motivations driving Fuku are loyalty to the ancient race it represents and a deep-seated agenda concerning the resurrection of Mikeru. Fuku's role in the story extends far beyond that of a simple messenger. It is revealed to be an entity from the time of the ancient humans, with its primary mission being to revive Mikeru and the rest of the ancient race to take control of the world. To this end, Fuku has manipulated events for a very long time, including inciting the father of two other characters, Mikaru and Rihito, to resurrect Mikeru from a fossilized state. When Mikeru shows hesitation or a loss of will to fight, Fuku reveals its true power by taking control of Mikeru's body to ensure the mission continues.
Key relationships define Fuku's interactions throughout the series. With Mikeru, Fuku presents a façade of a helpful servant but in reality manipulates and even possesses him, acting as a secret keeper who administers "medication" to control the master. Fuku also has a connection to Mikaru, as the innocent bird in her cage is actually Fuku in disguise, sent to spy on her and ensure she is eventually absorbed to strengthen Mikeru. Among Mikeru's other servants, Fuku relies most on Lady Bat, recognizing him as intelligent and powerful, and gets along well with Lanhua like a good friend. In contrast, Fuku deeply distrusts the chaotic and irresponsible Alala, though there are hints that Fuku may secretly have a crush on her.
Fuku's development across the season moves from a seemingly silly nuisance to a central manipulator. The character's true, threatening nature is gradually revealed, culminating in the possession of Mikeru to force a final confrontation. In terms of abilities, Fuku is not a direct combatant but possesses powerful supernatural talents. Its primary abilities include the power to possess and control the bodies of others, the ability to resurrect Mikeru when he is weak, and the capability to transform between a small, chibi-like angel form and the disguise of a realistic bird.
