Description
Lan Hua, also known as Ranfa or Lang Fa, is a supporting antagonist in the second season of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. She is introduced as a servant of the angelic being Mikeru, referring to herself as the wings of desire and contentment. Lan Hua takes the form of a young woman with very long purple hair and red eyes in her true appearance; when disguised as a human, her eyes become brown while her hair color remains the same. She wears a red qipao and possesses a pair of blue-purple butterfly wings, giving her an elegant, butterfly-like appearance.

Lan Hua is characterized by extreme vanity, claiming to be the most beautiful being in the ocean and openly disdainful of the mermaid princesses, whom she considers ugly. She also holds a contemptuous view of humans, seeing them as toys that deserve punishment for polluting the sea and sky. These beliefs drive her motivations, as she eagerly carries out Mikeru's commands to attack the mermaid princesses and interfere with their mission. Her pride in her own beauty and her loyalty to her creator are central to her actions.

In the story, Lan Hua serves as one of Mikeru's primary agents during the second season. She directly opposes the main mermaid protagonists—Lucia, Hanon, Rina, and later the other princesses—using her musical abilities in battle. Her role is to hinder the mermaids and further Mikeru's plan to dominate or destroy the human world. She has key relationships with Mikeru, who created her and commands her loyalty, and with her fellow servants Lady Bat and Alala, though she often acts independently.

Lan Hua's notable abilities revolve around her song. She performs a piece called Hana to Chou no Serenade (Flowers and Butterflies Serenade), which compels anyone who hears it to dance uncontrollably, potentially to the point of exhaustion or death. Additionally, she can divide her body into a dozen much smaller, chibi-like versions of herself that play traditional Chinese musical instruments. These miniature forms appear harmless and cute but are actually dangerous, as they continue the same entrancing melody. In her true form, she can also use her fan to produce sparkling shards of ice, which she employs to attack or harass her enemies.

Lan Hua shows little character development over the course of the series; she remains a haughty and devoted minion of Mikeru until her defeat. In the original manga, she is eliminated by Mikeru himself when she fails him, while in the anime adaptation she is transformed into a sphere of light and absorbed, a less violent end. Her name derives from the Mandarin Chinese word for lotus, reflecting the floral and Chinese-inspired motifs in her design and musical style.
