TV-Series
Description
Kaito Domoto is the male lead in the romantic fantasy story. He is a popular and talented surfer who initially appears as a confident, cool, and somewhat unapproachable figure. This persona makes him a magnet for attention from other students, but it is largely a facade that hides a more thoughtful and caring personality. Beneath the surface of the charming athlete, Kaito is introspective and deeply affected by a pivotal event from his childhood.

Background and History

Kaito was found on a beach as a baby and was adopted by a couple who were famous musicians. His life changed dramatically seven years before the main events of the story when the luxury liner he was on with his adoptive parents capsized in a terrible storm. During this shipwreck, a young mermaid named Lucia rescued him from drowning. To save him, she placed her magical pink pearl into his hands, which revived him. This event left Kaito with a powerful, haunting memory of a beautiful mermaid singing to him in the water. He kept Lucia's pearl as a treasured necklace for years, hoping one day to find the mermaid who saved him. The loss of his parents in the same incident adds a layer of personal tragedy to his background. Afterward, he went to live with his step-aunt and step-cousin.

Personality

While Kaito is often seen as a "playboy" with an easy charm and a bit of an ecchi streak, this behavior is often a front. He is initially dismissive and teasing toward Lucia in her human form, failing to recognize her as the mermaid from his past. However, as the story progresses, his defensive and cool attitude begins to crumble. He becomes more flustered and embarrassed around Lucia, showing genuine care and concern for her. He struggles with his feelings, as he is deeply in love with the mermaid who saved him, yet he also finds himself drawn to the human Lucia, not realizing they are the same person. This internal conflict reveals his sincere and unassuming nature, as he eventually starts to fall in love with Lucia not just for being his rescuer, but for who she is as a person.

Motivations and Role in the Story

Kaitos primary personal motivation is to find the mermaid from his childhood, believing her to be his true love. This quest places him at the very center of the narrative. He is the primary love interest of the protagonist, Lucia, and much of the romantic tension stems from her inability to reveal her true identity to him. According to mermaid law, confessing her secret would cause her to turn into sea foam. Kaitos role is that of the protected love interest. He often finds himself in danger from the series antagonists, sea demons who seek to capture the mermaid princesses. In these situations, Lucia and the other mermaids must transform and sing to save him, which creates the classic magical girl dynamic of the hero needing to be rescued. However, Kaito is not entirely helpless, as he possesses latent powers that manifest in critical moments, often serving as a deus ex machina to help the heroines in a pinch.

Key Relationships

Lucia Nanami is the most important person in Kaitos life. Their relationship is built on two levels: his idealised love for the mermaid who saved him, and his slowly growing affection for the clumsy human girl who attends his school. He unknowingly keeps Lucias pearl with him for years, which serves as a symbolic connection between them. For a significant part of the story, he is torn between these two perceived separate individuals, not realizing they are the same person. This creates a love triangle of one, where his eventual choice to accept his feelings for the human Lucia over the memory of the mermaid is a key point of character development.

His relationship with Gaito is one of the storys most significant reveals. Gaito is the main antagonist of the first season and is revealed to be Kaitos long-lost twin brother. They are the princes of an ancient water race known as Panthalassa. The ocean goddess Aqua Regina separated them at birth to prevent them from causing chaos in the world. This makes Kaito more than just an ordinary human, but a being with a hidden, extraordinary heritage that places him directly between the human and mermaid worlds.

Development

Kaito undergoes considerable development throughout the series. He begins as a somewhat shallow and unattainable school idol, obsessed with a memory. As he spends more time with Lucia in her human form, his feelings deepen from annoyance to genuine care and love. When confronted with the truth about his parents and his own mysterious origins, he is forced to rely on Lucia for emotional support, which strengthens their bond. Later, in the second season, Kaito suffers a surfing accident in Hawaii that causes him to lose all his memories, including those of Lucia and the mermaid world. This creates a painful setback for the main couple, as Lucia must try to help him regain his past, while he is cared for by another girl. Ultimately, his memories and love for Lucia prevail, leading to their final reunion.

Notable Abilities

Kaito does not possess standard magical abilities, but he has distinct skills and unique traits. He is a highly skilled and internationally competitive surfer, which is his main talent and passion. Furthermore, due to his lineage as a prince of the Panthalassa, he has an innate connection to the sea. In moments of extreme duress, particularly when Lucia is in danger, he can manifest extraordinary powers that unconsciously help him fight off the sea demons, often surprising even himself and the villains with their strength.
