TV-Series
Description
Hanon Hosho is one of the central characters of the series and serves as the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean, entrusted with the power of the aquamarine pearl. In her human form, she appears as a fourteen-year-old girl with short, dark azure hair, usually held by a distinctive X-shaped barrette, and brown eyes. Her true mermaid form reveals long, wavy, light blue hair and aqua blue eyes. Her birthday is May 24th. Unlike some of the other mermaid princesses who came to land in search of someone, Hanon initially fled from her underwater kingdom after it was destroyed by water demons, leading her to seek refuge in the human world.
Hanon is characterized by a kind and friendly demeanor, but she is also known for her strong passion for fashion, shopping, and makeup. She declares herself an expert on love and is often eager to offer advice to her friends about their romantic lives, though her own affairs of the heart tend to be much more complicated. Initially, she believed that love between a mermaid and a human was wrong, but this perspective changed dramatically when she developed her own feelings for a human. She has a playful and sometimes aggressive side, especially when overcome by jealousy or when protecting those she cares about. Despite her flighty and boy-crazy exterior, she possesses a resilient spirit and takes her duties as a princess seriously.
A significant part of Hanon's personal journey involves her romantic interests. She falls deeply in love with Tarō Mitsuki, her music teacher, whom she affectionately calls Tarō-chan. This crush is a major driving force for her in the first part of the story. She eventually learns that Mitsuki has a complicated past with another mermaid, Sara. Later, after Mitsuki leaves for Germany, Hanon attracts the attention of a boy named Nagisa Shirai, who retrieves some precious sheet music for her. Initially dismissive of his feelings, she eventually begins to reciprocate them as her relationship with Nagisa develops over time.
Her key relationships anchor her to the human world and the fight to protect it. She becomes best friends with Lucia Nanami, the Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific, from her very first day at school. Together with Rina Toin, the Princess of the North Atlantic, the three form a tight-knit trio who live and fight alongside each other. This friendship is central to her role in the story, as the mermaid princesses unite their powers against common enemies such as Gaito, the Black Beauty Sisters, and later Mikeru. Her loyalty to her friends is strong, even as she sometimes lets her romantic distractions cause tension among the group.
Hanon's character shows notable development over the course of the series. She matures from a girl who fled a destroyed kingdom to a brave princess who will sacrifice her own safety to protect her loved ones, as shown when she boldly steps in to protect Mitsuki from Sara. She struggles with her feelings and learns to challenge her own preconceptions about love. In the second season, she is forced to confront her lingering feelings for Mitsuki while navigating her budding affection for Nagisa, eventually finding the courage to move forward in a new relationship. Hanon is also known for keeping her promises, no matter how difficult they may be.
In her mermaid form, her physical abilities are enhanced, and like all mermaid princesses, she can communicate with sea life. Her primary ability, however, comes from her power to transform into her idol form, known as Mizuiro Pearl Voice or Blue Pearl Voice. By shouting her transformation phrase, she uses the power of her pearl to change into a specialized singing costume. In this form, her voice becomes a weapon that can repel demons, dispel hypnosis, purify evil, heal, and create protective barriers. Her songs are transmitted through a microphone-like device called an E-pitch. She is known for her image songs, including Ever Blue and Mizuiro no Senritsu (Sky Blue Melody). As the series progresses, she receives an upgraded outfit from the sea goddess Aqua Regina, which grants her even greater power to face stronger enemies.
