Description
Haruka Fukagawa is a supporting character in Lovely Complex, introduced as a childhood friend of the protagonist, Risa Koizumi. He first appears after transferring to Maito High School at the beginning of his second year, having lived abroad until the end of his first year of high school. His grandmother is of British descent, making him one-quarter English, a detail reflected in his distinctive features as he has light brown or strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes. He stands at 185 centimeters tall, making him the second tallest character in the series and only one centimeter shorter than his cousin, Kuniumi Maitake. Despite his height, he has a medium-muscular build and is not particularly athletic, often seen wearing business casual clothing when not in his school uniform.

His personality presents a stark contrast between his initial appearance and his true nature. When first encountered, Haruka comes across as mature, handsome, and charming, appearing to be deeply devoted to Risa. However, this exterior quickly gives way to a far less flattering reality. In truth, Haruka is quite immature and has a manipulative side to his character. He has been known to date other girls, at one point having seven girlfriends simultaneously, not out of genuine interest but as practice to become a better boyfriend for Risa, the girl he truly wants to be with. This behavior reveals a self-centered and calculated approach to romance, viewing relationships as training exercises rather than genuine connections.

This immaturity is also evident in his childhood, as flashbacks depict him as a quiet and sensitive boy who was frequently seen crying. He was often bullied by other children because his first name, Haruka, is considered feminine, and it was Risa who would stand up for him and chase the bullies away. As a result, he came to view Risa as his personal hero and has harbored a long-standing desire for her to become his girlfriend so that she would continue to protect him. This admiration is the core of his motivation, but it is a possessive and idealized form of love rather than a mature understanding of Risa as an independent person.

In the story, Haruka functions primarily as a rival to Atsushi Otani, with whom he is frequently cruel and antagonistic. He constantly nags Risa about her friendship with Otani, persistently tries to break the two of them apart, and makes a point of insulting Otani, often referring to him by his height. His role as a romantic obstacle is most prominent following his arrival, where his handsome appearance and apparent devotion create tension in Risa and Otani's developing relationship. He also has a tendency to behave inappropriately towards Seiko Kotobuki, going out of his way to make her uncomfortable by lifting her skirt with a grab claw.

Key relationships define his interactions with the main cast. His relationship with Risa is the most significant, though it is entirely one-sided as she does not reciprocate his romantic feelings, viewing him primarily as a childhood friend. His dynamic with Otani is one of open hostility, driven by jealousy and his desire to eliminate what he sees as competition for Risa's affection. He is also a cousin to Kuniumi Maitake, known as Maity, and their conversations reveal personal details about his life, such as his admission to university through a recommendation entrance exam. Haruka was also the head of the home economics club, though he was fired from this position by Seiko Kotobuki for being useless.

In terms of character development, Haruka does not undergo a significant transformation. After he confesses his feelings to Risa and is rejected, his importance to the main plot diminishes considerably. He remains a persistent but ultimately unsuccessful suitor, and his role becomes less prominent as the focus remains firmly on the central relationship between Risa and Otani. The creator of the series has noted that Haruka is an easy character to handle because his behavior can be unpredictable, making him a convenient source of conflict and comedy. His notable abilities are not physical or intellectual, but rather social. He is very handsome and popular, using his appearance and charm to attract numerous girls, and he has a knack for disrupting the status quo with his manipulative and immature schemes.
