Description
Makoto Ōgami is one of the three central protagonists in the anime Ghost Hound, a junior high school student living in the small town of Suiten. He was born into the Ōgami family, which founded a religious organization currently led by his elderly grandmother, Himeko. His childhood was marked by severe trauma: shortly after the kidnapping of the Komori children, his father died by suicide under bizarre circumstances, and Makoto discovered his father's bloodied corpse. His mother later left the home, leaving him to be raised primarily by his grandmother. These events left him emotionally scarred and distrustful of others.

In his daily life, Makoto is cold, level-headed, and socially withdrawn. He rarely attends school and when he does, he is seen as a delinquent by his classmates. He keeps to himself and avoids seeking out contact, preferring to spend time alone playing the guitar, which serves as his primary outlet. He is intelligent and possesses a practical, analytical mind, particularly interested in the mechanics of the brain and consciousness. Despite his distant exterior, he harbors deep-seated anger and resentment toward his mother for abandoning him, as well as initial bitterness toward Tarō Komori, another boy who was kidnapped in the same incident that indirectly triggered his father's death.

Makoto's motivation throughout the story is to uncover the truth behind his father's death and to understand the strange events that have haunted his family. He is also driven by a need to confront his own buried emotions and the fractured relationships in his life. His role in the narrative is as a key member of the trio—alongside Tarō and Masayuki—who investigate the supernatural occurrences in Suiten. Together, they learn to enter the Unseen World, a spirit realm where they confront their traumas.

Makoto possesses a notable ability: he can induce out-of-body experiences, or O.B.E.s, often triggered while playing his guitar. In the spirit realm, he learns to shape his astral form into that of a wolf-like hound, giving him a powerful and protective presence in the Unseen World. He is also able to project his consciousness with increasing control as the series progresses.

His key relationships include his grandmother Himeko, who expects him to eventually lead the family religion, a role he resists. He is distantly related to Tarō, and their shared history leads to an initial hostility that gradually softens as they work together. He forms a close bond with Masayuki, whose curiosity and directness help draw Makoto out of his shell. The most emotionally charged relationship is with his mother, whom he meets again after years of separation. At first he is furious and even contemplates violence, but after learning of her own deep depression and a suicide attempt, he rescues her and eventually reconciles, calling her "Mom" for the first time in years.

Over the course of the series, Makoto undergoes significant development. He moves from a guarded, angry boy to someone who can forgive and accept love from others. He becomes more confident in his abilities and more willing to rely on his friends. His journey is one of confronting pain, rebuilding trust, and finding a place where his past no longer controls him.
