Description
Jennifer "Jenny" Nolan, whose original Japanese name is Hiromi Oka, is the fifteen-year-old protagonist of the anime. She is a cheerful and energetic high school freshman who attends Nishi High School, an institution famous for its exceptional tennis club. At the beginning of the story, Jenny joins the tennis club primarily out of admiration for two individuals: Reika Ross, the school's elegant and highly skilled star player known as "Madame Butterfly," and Teddy, the handsome and gentle captain of the boys' tennis team. Her initial lack of confidence in her own abilities is a defining trait, as she never imagined herself becoming a serious competitor.

Despite her insecurities, Jenny possesses an inner reservoir of determination that is recognized by the new, hard-driving coach, Jeremy OConnors. He selects the inexperienced Jenny to be a main player in the upcoming regional tournament, a decision that generates intense hostility from other club members, particularly the rival player Evelyn, who was displaced by Jenny. This sets the stage for Jennys central struggle: enduring the pressure, isolation, and outright cruelty of her teammates while trying to prove that she deserves her place on the team. Her primary motivation becomes demonstrating to herself and others that she has the potential to become a professional player, fueled by a growing, genuine love for the sport itself.

Her role in the story is that of an underdog whose hidden talent blossoms under the rigorous and often brutal tutelage of her coach. Her journey is marked by key rivalries and relationships. Her dynamic with Reika is complex, shifting from pure admiration to a tense and competitive rivalry, as Reika feels threatened by Jenny`s rapid progress and at one point even forces Jenny to choose between tennis and her friendship. Equally important is her friendship with the vivacious Mary, who remains a loyal and supportive companion throughout. Her relationship with Coach Jeremy is pivotal; he is a demon-like taskmaster who pushes her relentlessly, but his faith in her potential is the catalyst for her entire transformation.

Throughout the series, Jenny undergoes significant development. She suffers from the ostracism of her peers and the cruel schemes of Evelyn but learns to persevere, focusing her concentration to win a decisive match against her rival. A major obstacle is learning to play doubles in partnership with the unwilling Reika, a challenge that eventually teaches them both the value of teamwork and mutual respect. Her development culminates in a final, grueling singles match against Reika for a spot on the national team, where she finally surpasses her idol. The coach also compels her to temporarily set aside her budding romantic feelings for Teddy, demanding complete dedication to tennis above all else. Jenny`s notable abilities are not based on natural, polished talent but on her fierce concentration, her extraordinary determination, and her remarkable mental and physical resilience, which allow her to overcome vastly more experienced opponents through sheer effort and willpower.
