Description
Doctor Shamal is a complex character who operates at the intersection of high-level medical practice, notorious assassination, and a seemingly single-minded pursuit of romance. A world-renowned physician and a feared hitman known as Trident Shamal, he is a man of stark contradictions. Despite his profound skills, he is perhaps best known for his exaggerated, often comedic womanizing, as he relentlessly flirts with every attractive woman he encounters, a habit that has forced him to hide in Japan after being charged for making advances on over two thousand women simultaneously, including a queen.
Shamal's personal philosophy, which governs both his professional and social life, is his refusal to treat male patients. He openly expresses disgust at the idea of physical contact with men and claims to have never examined one, though in practice he has made notable exceptions out of sympathy or necessity. This principle, however, is a striking contrast to his past as an assassin of immense capability. His reputation was such that he was invited to join the Varia, the Vongola family's elite and ruthless assassination squad, an offer he ultimately declined.
The source of both his healing and his deadly prowess is his own unique body and his signature weapon, the Trident Mosquitoes. Since birth, Shamal's body has been a host to 666 distinct and lethal diseases, a condition that should be fatal. However, these illnesses miraculously counteract one another, keeping him alive, with some diseases raising his temperature while others lower it. He carries 666 pills, each containing a mosquito infected with one of these specific maladies. He can deploy these Trident Mosquitoes to infect targets with a wide range of effects, from deadly illnesses like the Vibration Syndrome, which tears a body apart at the cellular level, to more peculiar afflictions like the Sakura-Kura disease, which renders its victim deathly weak to cherry blossoms. Conversely, by using the opposite disease, he can also cure seemingly incurable conditions, as demonstrated when he used the Angelitis to neutralize the Skullitis afflicting Tsuna.
Beyond his biological arsenal, Shamal is a skilled combatant and instructor, particularly with explosives. He was responsible for introducing a young Hayato Gokudera to dynamite, serving as his first mentor. This relationship is one of Shamal's most significant. He later revisits this role during the Varia Arc, becoming Gokudera's home tutor and helping him develop the Rocket Bomb technique. Initially, Shamal had refused to teach Gokudera seriously because the boy did not value his own life. By watching Gokudera's growth and his resolve to live and protect others, Shamal finally steps in to provide proper guidance. His connection to the wider story is further cemented through his long-standing acquaintance with the Arcobaleno hitman, Reborn. Reborn claims that Shamal had a hand in his delivery, and in a flashback, it is revealed that Shamal helped erase Reborn's memories of his old self after he accepted his cursed Arcobaleno form.
While his lecherous actions often provide comic relief, such as when he is repeatedly struck down for his advances only to immediately resume his pursuit, Shamal is capable of being serious, cunning, and deeply pragmatic when the situation demands it. Throughout various story arcs, he appears as a reluctant ally, using his medical genius to heal the protagonists despite his grumbling about treating men, and his assassin skills to eliminate threats. His development is subtle, but it revolves around the rare moments where he pushes past his self-imposed rules to honor his professional and personal connections, showcasing a character whose actions are often more noble than his outwardly lecherous and selfish personality would suggest.
