Description
Dr. Schamal, also known as Trident Shamal, is a character who embodies a stark contradiction between his professional genius and his personal failings. He operates as an independent assassin and a highly skilled doctor, yet his reputation is notoriously colored by his obsessive womanizing. His background includes a forced relocation to Japan, as he is an internationally wanted man who became a fugitive after flirting with a queen and was charged with making advances on over two thousand women simultaneously. This incident is the primary reason he is hiding in Namimori.
Personality is the most defining and immediately noticeable aspect of his character. On the surface, Dr. Schamal is a crazed and compulsive womanizer who aggressively flirts with nearly every attractive female he encounters, moving from one target to the next with little success but relentless enthusiasm. He is a renowned doctor who famously refuses to treat male patients, a rule he only breaks on rare occasions when he feels sympathy for the individual, as he reluctantly did for Tsunayoshi Sawada. However, beneath this lecherous and seemingly flighty exterior lies a completely different persona. In serious situations, he is cunning, pragmatic, and capable of cold-blooded efficiency. He is the notorious assassin known as Trident Shamal, a title that reflects his deadly skills which were so impressive that he was once invited to join the fearsome Varia, though he declined the offer.
His motivations are driven by his dual nature. On a day-to-day basis, his primary goal appears to be the pursuit of women. In a more professional and historical sense, he is motivated by his work as a doctor and an assassin. His role in the story is primarily that of a supporting figure and a mentor. Most significantly, he is the one who introduced Hayato Gokudera to the use of bombs after the young Gokudera expressed a desire to learn his assassination techniques. During the Varia Arc, he becomes Gokudera's home tutor, helping him develop new techniques like the Rocket Bombs for the Ring Conflict. Beyond this mentorship, he serves as a capable ally, often providing medical assistance to Tsuna and his guardians during critical moments, albeit while constantly complaining about having to treat men.
Key relationships define his place in the world. His most important bond is with Hayato Gokudera, whom he taught and influenced deeply; Gokudera even copied his hairstyle as a sign of respect and admiration. He holds a significant, if off-screen, connection to the Arcobaleno Reborn. Reborn claims that Dr. Schamal had a hand in handling his birth, and later in a flashback, it is stated that Schamal "erased" Reborn's old self after he accepted his new Arcobaleno body. His relationship with Bianchi is also notable, as he is often seen attempting to court her, much to her annoyance.
Throughout the series, his development is subtle but present. While he never abandons his womanizing ways, his role evolves from a lazy, self-interested doctor to a more reliable ally who actively contributes to the Vongola's battles. He demonstrates a genuine, if gruff, concern for Gokudera's wellbeing, urging him to surrender a fight to save his own life. He also shows moments of serious cunning, such as when he instantly recognized the true nature of Aria and chose to keep his distance out of respect or caution.
His abilities are as contradictory as his personality. As a doctor, his medical knowledge is profound. As an assassin, his primary weapon is the Trident Mosquito. He carries 666 pills, each containing a mosquito infected with a deadly disease. Notably, he himself naturally contracts viruses easily and claims to be infected with 666 diseases, but he remains alive because all the illnesses negate each other, such as one that decreases body temperature being counteracted by one that increases it. He can deploy these mosquitoes to infect targets with a variety of custom-made illnesses, such as the Verginious Cherryitis which weakens a victim in the presence of cherry blossoms, or use a counter-agent like Angelitis to cure diseases such as the Skull Disease. In addition to his biological weapons, he is also highly skilled with dynamite and bombs, a talent he passed on to Gokudera.
