Description
Kikyo is a character from the manga and anime series Reborn! He serves as the leader of the Real Six Funeral Wreaths, the elite guardians of the Millefiore Famiglia's leader, Byakuran. He holds the Cloud Mare Ring, which grants him formidable powers. Among the six members, he is consistently recognized as the strongest and often acts as the group's combat strategist.
In terms of background, Kikyo originally hailed from a parallel universe where he faced immense personal misfortune. Before being discovered by Byakuran, he was beaten by his own employer. This history of suffering and hardship fostered a powerful resolution within him. Byakuran saved him from this fate and bestowed upon him a Mare Ring, earning Kikyo's undying loyalty. As a result, he follows Byakuran's every wish without question. His perception is so sharp and his dedication so absolute that he often anticipates and acts upon what he believes Byakuran would want, even without receiving direct orders.
Personality-wise, Kikyo is markedly different from his often volatile and eccentric comrades. He is composed, calm, and analytical, frequently spending his time explaining situations to the other Funeral Wreaths or physically restraining them when necessary. This cool-headedness makes him an effective coordinator during battles. However, his pragmatic nature extends to his fighting style; he is not above using underhanded or ruthless tactics to quickly end a fight he considers a waste of time. This ruthlessness is demonstrated when he follows Byakuran's order to kill his own wounded comrade, Genkishi, by growing his bellflowers inside Genkishi's armor. His name, which translates to "Chinese bellflower," aligns with the flower-based naming theme of the Real Six Funeral Wreaths.
Kikyo's role in the story is primarily as a major antagonist during the Future Arc. He is a key player in the Choice battle, where he efficiently destroys decoys, disables Hayato Gokudera, and destroys the Vongola base, securing victory for the Millefiore. In the subsequent final battle, he confronts multiple Vongola members, unleashing his most powerful abilities. He has notable interactions with his fellow Funeral Wreaths, such as Bluebell and Torikabuto, coordinating their attacks under Byakuran's direction.
Key relationships define his character, with his absolute devotion to Byakuran being the most significant. He views Byakuran as his king and savior, a loyalty reflected in the meaning of his name, which symbolizes unchanging love or fidelity. His relationships with his comrades are more functional; he acts as a handler for their more unpredictable behaviors, though he is not above eliminating them if Byakuran commands it.
Throughout the Future Arc, Kikyo undergoes little in the way of personal change, remaining a steadfast and formidable servant to Byakuran. Even after Byakuran's defeat, Kikyo attempts to explain that his leader had saved them from misfortune, showing his loyalty persists to the end. He is subsequently shot in the head by Xanxus but is taken by Lussuria, who claims he can keep him alive using Sun Flames, leaving his ultimate fate ambiguous. A present-day version of Kikyo later appears during the Curse of the Rainbow Arc, fighting as one of Byakuran's representatives until he is eliminated.
Regarding his notable abilities, Kikyo benefits from Byakuran's parallel universe knowledge, meaning he is already aware of all the techniques, strengths, and weaknesses of his opponents before fighting them. He wields several unique Box Weapons. His Campanula di Nuvola, or Cloud Bellflowers, are versatile projectiles that can drain a person's life force, serve as powerful projectiles, and even seal other Box Weapons by blocking their flame injection points. He can summon an army of Nuvola Velociraptor, dinosaur Box Weapons that he claims are far more powerful than standard animal-type weapons. His ultimate ability is his Box of Carnage, Spinosauro Nuvola. This transformation turns him into a spinosaurus-human hybrid. Unlike other Funeral Wreaths who become more feral, Kikyo retains his human intellect while gaining immense power. He can use his Cloud Flame-infused hair to generate an endlessly multiplying army of spinosaurus that can attack from any direction, creating a seemingly endless wave of monstrous dinosaurs.
