Description
George, Duke of Clarence, is the second son of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, placing him between brothers Edward IV and Richard III in the York line. He initially shows an honest, straightforward nature, treating younger brother Richard with kindness yet lacking deeper consideration in their bond. Their relationship strains under family pressures, including Richard's intersex identity and Cecily's rejection of Richard.

George backs Edward IV's claim in the Wars of the Roses, but his loyalty fractures through political maneuvering and personal ambition. He weds Isabelle Neville, eldest daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, sealing a pact engineered by Warwick to control York succession. This alliance draws George into Warwick’s plots, briefly defecting to the Lancastrian cause to reinstate Henry VI. George’s grievances include Edward’s marriage to Elizabeth Woodville and conflicts over territory and authority, especially regarding the Warwick inheritance.

After Warwick’s death, George secures substantial Warwick lands, igniting a fierce feud with Richard, who married Warwick’s other daughter, Anne Neville. Violent clashes over the estate force Edward IV to partition the holdings. George’s bitterness intensifies, stoked by envy of Richard’s sway and his own blocked aspirations, such as Edward thwarting his bid to wed Mary of Burgundy.

George’s downfall peaks with arrest and imprisonment when Edward IV confirms treasonous schemes. Adapted historical accounts depict George circulating rumors challenging Edward’s legitimacy and fomenting rebellion. Parliament attaints him after trial, implicating Richard in his execution. His death—drowning in a butt of malmsey wine—cements his legacy.

He leaves two children: Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, and Edward Plantagenet, Earl of Warwick, their futures eclipsed by the family’s strife.
