TV-Series
Description
Czeslaw Meyer, whose full name is also given as Czeslaw Meyer, is a character who appears to be a young boy around ten years of age but is in fact an immortal being several centuries old. His physical form is frozen at the age he was when he consumed the Elixir of Life in 1711, leaving him with a small, lean, and somewhat frail-looking body, neatly parted dark brown hair, and an innocent demeanor that belies his true age. His typical attire consists of a beige cap, a white long-sleeved shirt, a grey vest, and a brown-striped blazer, which helps him blend into the background of the 1930s setting.
Czeslaw comes from a line of alchemists and was orphaned at a very young age, around 1705, after which he was taken in by his grandfather's disciples, Begg Garrott and Lebreau Fermet Viralesque. It was with Fermet that he boarded the ship Advenna Avis in 1711, where the alchemist Maiza Avaro performed the ritual to summon a demon and distribute the Elixir of Life, granting Czeslaw and the others on board immortality.
Following this event, Czeslaw’s life descended into a prolonged nightmare at the hands of his guardian, Fermet. Under the guise of testing the limits of his new immortality, Fermet subjected the young boy to relentless and sadistic torture. Methods included having his eyes stabbed with hot fireplace tongs, being dropped into acid baths, and being thrown into roaring fires. After enduring this abuse for a significant period, which may have spanned decades, Czeslaw finally fought back and devoured Fermet, absorbing his memories and ending his own suffering. However, the act granted him access to Fermet's twisted thoughts and the visceral joy his tormentor took in the pain he caused. This experience shattered Czeslaw's psyche, replacing any concept of love or trust with a deep-seated conviction that the world contained only deception.
As a result of this extreme trauma, Czeslaw developed a personality defined by intense paranoia and a ruthless will to survive. He became highly manipulative, using his innocent appearance to lower the guard of those around him while harboring cynical and calculating thoughts beneath the surface. Despite his cunning and sharp mind, his emotional core remains that of a frightened child; his reactions to sudden shocks or terrifying situations are often impulsive, leading him to scream, run, or tremble in fear rather than act with the composure one might expect from someone his age. He is profoundly lonely and struggles to understand genuine affection, having been denied it for so long. His primary motivation for much of his long life was to seek out and preemptively devour other immortals before they could do the same to him, a mission born from his all-consuming fear.
In the story, which is largely set in 1931, Czeslaw boards the transcontinental luxury train, the Flying Pussyfoot, under an alias. He is on his way to New York with a dual purpose: to sell a new prototype of his own explosives to a mafia family and to locate and devour Maiza Avaro, the immortal alchemist from the Advenna Avis. His journey on the train brings him into contact with several key individuals. His attempt to manipulate the violent gangster Ladd Russo backfires catastrophically, resulting in Ladd shooting him in the face for his condescending attitude. His plan is further derailed when he is discovered and subjected to brutal torture by the Rail Tracer, a mysterious entity that punishes him for threatening the lives of other passengers.
His pivotal moment of development occurs when he is found by the kind-hearted thieves Isaac and Miria. Despite his earlier misanthropy, their completely selfless and genuine care for him—particularly when they shield his regenerating body with their own, believing him to be in danger—shatters his cynical worldview. Their unconditional kindness begins to thaw his paranoia. This emotional breakthrough culminates at the end of the journey when he finally meets Maiza in New York. Instead of attempting to devour him, Czeslaw breaks down, crying and embracing Maiza as the last link to a time before his suffering began.
Following these events, Czeslaw goes to live with the homunculus Ennis and Firo Prochainezo as their roommate, gradually learning to trust and accept a form of family life. His key relationships become central to his slow recovery, with Ennis acting as a sister figure and Firo as a guardian. By the 1970s, he and Maiza would eventually depart on a journey to find other surviving immortals from their original group, indicating a degree of healing and a new purpose in his long existence.
As an immortal, Czeslaw’s primary ability is his inability to die from conventional means. Any wound he suffers, no matter how severe, regenerates completely within seconds as his blood and tissue are drawn back to his body. He also possesses a high resistance to pain, a grim necessity born from centuries of torture. Apart from his immortality, his notable skills are his sharp, manipulative intellect and his talent for creating explosives, which he uses for both business and survival. His physical body, however, remains weak and childlike, offering no advantage in a direct confrontation.
