TV-Series
Description
Anko Tokosumi is the daughter of a journalist who discovers her involvement with the giant robot known as Zearth. When questioned by her father, she tells him the entire truth about her situation as a pilot, withholding only the knowledge of her ultimate fate. Her father, working alongside the military, attempts to fabricate a story about Zearth and the children to manage public opinion. Their efforts are preempted, however, by a boy who appears on television falsely claiming to be a pilot, which incites public hatred that culminates in his assassination. Following this, Anko's father receives authorization to broadcast his daughter's battle from inside the cockpit to the entire world.
Even as Anko faces grave danger, with acid from an enemy’s piercing needles breaching the cockpit and nearly killing her, her father refuses to stop the transmission despite objections from others. After the images are broadcast, messages of support pour into the station, and her father uses them to encourage her to fight back. Anko manages to turn the tide of the battle by using the enemy robot's own needles against it, knocking the opponent down. After securing victory, her father reveals that he was able to maintain his composure during the fight only because he had already been told about her inevitable death. Anko then sends a message to the world apologizing for the casualties caused during Zearth's battles before destroying the enemy cockpit and dying in her father's arms. Her piloting chair is a round stool with no legs.
In the anime series, her story has significant differences. Here, her father is a journalist working with the parents of other pilots not only to find a way to save the children from their contract but also to reveal the truth about Zearth to the world, despite government efforts to suppress it. However, he is forced to resign from his position at the television station after an affair with a famous model is made public, which happens just as she is chosen for her match. Through Kanji, a fellow pilot with whom she becomes very close, Anko finds the strength to bear the weight of the scandal. With his support, she is able to fight her enemy head-on, securing a quick victory before passing away happily in his arms.
