TV-Series
Description
Emily Fujiwara, known in the original Japanese version as Hazuki Fujiwara, is a central character in the anime Ojamajo Doremi #. She is introduced as a third-grade elementary school student, eight years old at the start of the series, and is the childhood friend and classmate of the protagonist, Doremi Harukaze. Born on February 14th, her blood type is A. She comes from a wealthy and well-regarded family; her father is a successful film director, and her mother, Reiko, is an accomplished businesswoman and interior decorator. Despite their affluence, her parents are often very busy, leaving much of Emily’s daily care and emotional support to her family’s long-time nanny, Baaya, with whom she shares a close, grandmotherly bond.

Physically, Emily is characterized by her fair skin and long brown hair, which she typically wears in a ponytail secured with an orange bow. She is most notably recognized by her round glasses, which accentuate her brown eyes. Her early outfits often reflected her family’s controlled lifestyle, consisting of formal, coordinated pieces such as a white blouse, a light yellow-orange vest, and an orange pleated skirt, though her wardrobe evolves over the series.

Emily’s personality is defined by her gentle, polite, and remarkably intelligent nature. She is one of the top students in her class and excels in structured activities arranged by her mother, such as playing the violin and ballet. However, this sheltered and highly managed upbringing has fostered significant timidity and a lack of self-confidence. She has a deep-seated fear of disappointing her parents and often suppresses her own desires to prioritize the expectations of others, particularly her mother. This makes it very difficult for her to openly express her true feelings. She is also notoriously terrified of ghosts and easily frightened in general, a trait her friends sometimes use to tease her. Beneath her quiet and reserved exterior, Emily possesses a hidden well of determination and stubbornness, especially when she feels a principle is being violated or an injustice is occurring.

Her primary motivation for becoming a witch apprentice begins when she and her friend Aiko Senoo witness Doremi using magic. To help protect Doremi’s secret, Emily agrees to join her as an apprentice, becoming the Orange Witch Apprentice. While her initial transformations are sometimes clumsy, with her glasses getting caught on her apprentice dress, she quickly proves to be exceptionally talented in spellcasting, often surpassing Doremi in skill and precision. Her magic incantation is often "Paipai Ponpoi Puwapuwa Puu!", and her transformation chant is "Pretty Witch Hazuki tchi!". She is partnered with a gentle, timid fairy named Rere, who is called Mimi in some international versions.

Throughout the series, Emily’s relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Doremi is her emotional anchor, providing her with a space where she can be more open and vulnerable, even as Doremi’s impulsiveness sometimes conflicts with her own caution. She also forms a strong, complementary friendship with the more blunt and athletic Aiko, learning to appreciate her directness and support. She shares a quiet, intuitive kinship with the similarly sensitive Onpu Segawa. When the apprentice witches are tasked with caring for a magical infant named Hana, Emily’s patient, nurturing, and maternal instincts shine as she dedicates herself to being a good caretaker. A long-running and significant element of her story is her deep, unspoken romantic affection for a quiet classmate named Masaru Yada, which stems from a childhood memory of him comforting her over a lost hat. This affection is a source of both joy and emotional turmoil for her.

Emily’s character arc is a journey from passivity to self-assurance. A major turning point is learning to voice her own opinions and make decisions for herself, moving away from simply complying with her mother’s controlling demands. Her development culminates in a pivotal choice: to pursue her personal dream of becoming a violinist by attending a prestigious middle school, even if it means being separated from her best friend Doremi. This decision signifies her growth into a young woman with the confidence to forge her own path while still holding her cherished friendships dear. Her notable abilities include high academic intelligence, proficiency in the violin, and a natural talent for precise and effective magic, often involving animating objects or using orange-themed spells.
