TV-Series
Description
Bibi Harukaze, also known as Pop, is the younger sister of Doremi Harukaze. At the beginning of the story, she is around four or five years old, a kindergarten student who lives with her parents, Keisuke and Haruka. Her fairy partner is named Fafa.
In terms of personality, Bibi is notably mature and intelligent for her age, often displaying a level of cleverness and business sense that surpasses her older sister and her friends. She has a sharp tongue and a gift for repartee, which she frequently uses to tease Doremi about her clumsiness and lack of a boyfriend. Despite this seemingly superior attitude, she still retains childlike qualities, such as a firm belief in Santa Claus and a tendency to fall asleep very early, a trait that often causes her to miss the nocturnal witch exams. She is also described as having a bit of an authoritative streak and can become quite angry when the situation calls for it, but she is equally capable of showing great kindness to comfort her friends.
Bibi’s primary motivation initially is not to become a witch, but rather to look out for herself and, eventually, her sister. She stumbles upon the secret of the Maho-do magic shop after following her sister and discovering Doremi and her friends using magic. To protect their secret, she is made a witch apprentice as well. Despite her young age, she proves to be a natural at magic, learning spells much faster than Doremi and often being left in charge of selling items at the magic shop due to her incredible sales skills.
Her role in the story evolves significantly over the course of the series. Initially serving as a minor character who mainly antagonizes her sister, she becomes the fourth member of the core witch apprentice group. In the second season, she takes on the important role of being a "big sister" to the magical baby Hana, rather than a mother figure, which helps her build confidence. She is often seen helping out at the Maho-do and participating in the various challenges the group faces, from taking patissier exams to defending the Witch World.
Key relationships define much of her character arc. The most central is her relationship with her sister, Doremi. Their bond is rooted in sibling rivalry, partly fueled by Bibi feeling neglected when their mother focused on teaching Doremi the piano. She often acts condescendingly towards Doremi, but as they both share the secret of being witches, their relationship warms significantly, transforming into a deep, collaborative, and protective loyalty. She also becomes very close friends with Onpu Segawa, as they share a similar mature and serious personality. Later, her dynamic with Hana is also significant, shifting from rivalry and envy over attention to a cooperative and guiding relationship when Hana joins the human world as a student.
Throughout the series, Bibi undergoes clear development. She begins as a resentful younger sibling seeking attention and superiority, but grows into a dedicated and perceptive witch apprentice. She learns to embrace her own imperfections and childish side rather than striving for relentless perfectionism. By the end of the series, she faces the difficult decision of whether to become a full witch, which would grant her a long life but separate her from her family, a choice that highlights her journey toward self-determination.
As a witch apprentice, Bibi is exceptionally gifted. Her notable abilities include a strong aptitude for magic, often mastering skills with little difficulty. She uses a red, clover-shaped crystal ball for her spells. Her transformation chant is "Pretty Witch Pop-cchi!" and her primary spell incantation is "Pipitto Puritto Puritan Peperuto!". Her biggest weakness is not a lack of skill, but her human limitation of needing to sleep early, which hinders her ability to take the nighttime exams required to advance her magical rank.
