Description
Mayorka, also known as Majo Rika or under her human alias Rika Makihatayama, is a witch and the owner of the Maho-Dou, a modest magic shop that serves as a portal between the human world and the Witch World. Her role in the story begins when the protagonist Doremi Harukaze accidentally discovers her true identity, triggering a curse that transforms Mayorka into a witch frog. To regain her original form, she must mentor Doremi until she becomes a fully fledged witch, and thus she takes on Doremi as her first apprentice. Over time, she is forced to accept Doremi’s friends as additional apprentices, and later she also helps care for the magical baby Hana, who is destined to become the next queen of the Witch World.

Mayorka has a choleric temperament and is often grumpy, cantankerous, and blunt in her criticism. She has little patience for carelessness or laziness, and she frequently scolds the girls, especially Doremi, calling them bothersome witches. Despite her irritable exterior, she is genuinely devoted to her apprentices and deeply cares for their well-being. She shows this through small, unspoken acts of kindness, such as staying up all night to tend to baby Hana or visiting her own mother with sentimentality. Her motivation throughout the series is to fulfill her responsibilities as a mentor and to protect those under her care, even if she grumbles about the trouble they cause. She is a hardworking and responsible figure who takes her duties seriously.

Mayorka’s key relationships include her fairy Lala, who is more patient and soft spoken and often mediates her harsher moments. She has a close but frequently exasperated bond with Doremi, whom she sees as a lovable but clumsy student. She also interacts with the other witches, especially the rival witch Majo Ruka, and she ultimately develops a maternal attachment to Hana. Over the course of the series, Mayorka undergoes subtle development: her gruffness softens as she grows more openly affectionate, and she learns to trust her apprentices’ judgment. At the end of the final season, the witch frog curse is lifted, and she returns to the Witch World with Hana and the fairies.

As a witch, Mayorka possesses standard magical abilities, including spellcasting and transformation. She is knowledgeable about witch laws and traditions, and she can create magical items and potions. Her skills in running a shop are notably poor, a running gag in the series, but her competence as a witch is never in question. She is also able to communicate with fairies and navigate between worlds, making her an essential guide for the young apprentices.
