Description
Hanna, known affectionately as Hana-chan, is a central figure introduced in the second season of the anime, Ojamajo Doremi Sharp. Her origin is extraordinary, as the main characters Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko witness her miraculous birth from a blue rose in the Witch World. This event marks her as a baby of immense magical potential and the prophesied successor to the throne of the Witch World. Following her birth, the responsibility of raising her in the human world is entrusted to the young apprentice witches, making her an integral part of their daily lives.
Hana-chan is characterized by a bright and affectionate personality, combined with an overwhelming curiosity about the world around her. Despite her powerful origins, her mentality develops slowly, akin to a typical human child. This results in her being somewhat air-headed and naive, often acting on pure intentions without fully understanding the consequences, which can inadvertently lead to trouble for herself and those caring for her. She is not a spoiled child despite receiving immense attention; rather, she is easily pleased by simple things and possesses a huge heart. When upset, she is prone to crying and throwing tantrums like any child her age, but her overall nature is deeply loving and kind. Her speech pattern includes referring to herself in the third person, further emphasizing her childlike demeanor.
Hana’s primary motivation throughout the series is her desire to be close to the girls who raise her, whom she calls her mothers. Her role in the story evolves from being a magical infant they must protect from forces that wish to exploit her power to becoming an active participant in their adventures. For a significant period, the girls forgo using magic to care for her, highlighting the series' theme that personal bonds and effort are more important than magical solutions. This changes dramatically in the fourth season, Dokka~n, when Hana, unable to bear the separation from her caregivers, uses her immense magic to forcibly accelerate her own growth. She transforms into a girl the same age as Doremi and her friends and joins them as a fellow elementary school student and apprentice witch.
Her key relationships are overwhelmingly with her surrogate mothers: Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu, and later Momoko. Doremi, in particular, is the one who named her "Hana," which means flower in Japanese, and serves as her primary maternal figure. The other girls each contribute to her upbringing, teaching her valuable lessons about life, friendship, and responsibility. The bond she shares with them is the emotional core of the later seasons, driving many of her actions and her significant character development. In her forced-aged form, she maintains her baby-like personality and must learn to navigate the world not as a protected infant, but as a child her apparent age.
Regarding her abilities, Hana is established from birth as an exceptionally powerful witch, possessing magic far surpassing that of the apprentice girls who care for her. Her power is so great that it requires special control, and the crystal balls that regulate it are a key part of her infant design. The ultimate demonstration of her ability is her self-infanced aging, a feat that shatters her regulating crystals and leaves her reliant on the combined magical energy of her friends to perform even basic spells as an apprentice. This event transforms her from a being of raw, untamed power to one who must learn control and cooperation. She is often noted as the "Sixth Ranger" of the group, a special member whose presence changes the team's dynamic.
