Description
Gen Shishio is a young teenager who first appears as a transfer student at Karasumori Academy, but his true purpose is to assist the kekkaishi in protecting the sacred site. He is the youngest son of the Shishio family and a member of the Night Troop, the combat division of the Shadow Organization tasked with managing supernatural threats.
Gen possesses a striking and serious appearance for his age, with sharp, animal-like eyes, spiky black hair, and darker skin than his peers. His battle attire consists of a ninja-like purple outfit featuring the Shadow Organization's star symbol, while at school he wears the standard uniform with his jacket left unzipped. A notable physical feature is a special blue flame tattoo wrapped around his body, which was applied to suppress his more dangerous abilities.
Gen's background is marked by hardship and isolation. He was born as an ayakashi majiri, a human with ayakashi heritage, specifically that of a wolf. Growing up as the youngest child in a large family, he was frequently tormented by his older brothers and local bullies, finding solace only in his sister Ryo. When his uncontrolled powers led to a severe incident where he injured several people, including his own brothers, his family made the difficult decision to send him away to the Shadow Organization. Overhearing what he perceived as a betrayal by his beloved sister triggered a complete loss of control, forcing Masamori Sumimura to subdue him. Masamori then offered Gen a place in the Night Troop, providing him with a purpose and a means to learn control, while the tattoo was placed on his body to cause excruciating pain should he ever fully transform again, acting as a failsafe.
In terms of personality, Gen is profoundly solitary and initially slow to trust or interact with others. Having been treated as a monster for much of his life, he is deeply reluctant to form close bonds, fearing that people will either be hurt by his powers or come to fear and reject him. He spends a great deal of time observing and reflecting on the behavior of those around him, often puzzled by social dynamics he does not understand, such as the cooperative partnership between Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura despite their families being traditional rivals. Despite his guarded exterior, Gen shares a core trait with Yoshimori: he thinks nothing of stepping into danger to protect others, though his motivation is rooted in a sense of duty to Masamori, who gave his life purpose.
Gen is sent to Karasumori by Masamori to lend his combat power to Yoshimori and Tokine against the incursions of the Kokuboro organization. His role in the story is that of a powerful, tragic ally. At first, he operates independently, destroying ayakashi before the kekkaishi can even arrive, as he is unimpressed by Yoshimori's skills. This creates friction, but after witnessing Yoshimori's determination and strength in battle, Gen begins to develop a grudging respect for him. His key relationships are central to his development. He struggles to understand Yoshimori's open and persistent nature but comes to rely on him and Tokine as comrades, even if he rarely shows it openly. His unwavering loyalty belongs to Masamori, who saved him from his own destructive path.
Gen's character development is driven by his internal conflict with his own nature. He lives in constant fear of becoming an uncontrollable monster, a fear that the Kokuboro member Kaguro exploits. Kaguro points out their similarities as outsiders and attempts to sway Gen to their side, planting seeds of doubt. The culmination of his arc occurs when, to protect his friends from a powerful enemy named Gagin, Gen makes the conscious choice to fully transform into his wolf-man form, accepting the risk of losing himself. In a pivotal moment, he finds that Yoshimori and Tokine do not recoil in horror but accept and encourage him, allowing him to retain control of his mind for the first time. This moment of acceptance and self-acceptance is tragically cut short when he is mortally wounded by Kaguro. Surrounded by his comrades and finally at peace with his life, Gen dies with a smile, having found genuine friendship and a place where he belonged.
Regarding his notable abilities, Gen is a formidable physical fighter whose powers stem from his ayakashi heritage. His most common technique is a partial transformation, turning his hands and feet into large, powerful wolf-like claws. In this state, he gains immense physical strength, enough to rip through concrete and even slice through a kekkai barrier. His speed and agility are equally enhanced, allowing him to move as a blur and overwhelm opponents before they can react. He also possesses a powerful regenerative healing factor, capable of healing severe wounds and even regrowing entire limbs in moments, especially when fighting on the spiritually charged Karasumori land. His senses, particularly his sense of smell, are superhuman, allowing him to track ayakashi and other supernaturally-inclined individuals by scent. His final and most powerful ability is his full transformation into a large, bipedal wolf-man. This state dramatically boosts all of his physical statistics, granting him enough power to uproot trees with a single punch and slice through multiple obstacles with his claws, but it comes with the significant drawback of potentially losing his rational mind to his animalistic instincts.
