Description
Masamori Sumimura is the firstborn son of Sumiko and Shuji Sumimura, and the older brother of Yoshimori and Toshimori Sumimura. He is a highly skilled kekkaishi who uses the Hazama-style barrier techniques. Despite being the eldest, he was not chosen as the family's legitimate successor, a fact that deeply influences his path. Dissatisfied with the restrictions placed on him as a non-successor, he left the family home and joined the Shadow Organization, also known as the Urakai. There, he founded and became the leader of the Night Troop, a unit of young ability users still in training. He also holds the position of the seventh seat on the Council of Twelve, the executive committee of the Shadow Organization. His relationship with the eighth seat, Ogi Ichirou, is notably uneasy and hostile.

Masamori possesses overwhelming ability as a kekkaishi and is known for using techniques that are difficult for others to master. He appears older than his age, which is twenty-one. He returns home only occasionally, often for extended stays. His relationship with his younger brother Yoshimori is complex. Yoshimori is jealous of Masamori's skill and control, as well as the way Tokine Yukimura, Yoshimori's partner, acts around him. At the same time, Masamori is frequently seen looking at the palm of his right hand, where the mark of the legitimate successor is placed, suggesting that he harbors jealousy toward Yoshimori for being chosen, even if he does not fully acknowledge it. Yoshimori often wonders why his older brother was not selected as the heir. Masamori's motivations are driven by his sense of being overlooked and his desire to prove his worth outside the family structure. He builds his own power base within the Shadow Organization, leading the Night Troop and navigating the political tensions of the council. His development involves balancing his personal ambitions with his sense of duty to his family and the larger mission of protecting the sacred land of Karasumori. Notable abilities include his masterful use of advanced kekkai techniques, which he employs in combat against ayakashi and in his leadership role. His presence in the story is that of a capable and ambitious figure who operates largely apart from his family, yet remains connected to them through his brother and his own past.
