Description
Iolaous Oz Mehelim is a central supporting character in the anime Heroic Age. He is a twenty-year-old soldier of the Iron Tribe, humanity's last hope for survival in a hostile universe. As the son of Mobeedo, the captain of the flagship Argonaut, Iolaous holds a prestigious position within the tribe's military structure. He serves as the young leader of the Yunos Knights, an elite squadron of fighter pilots who operate mecha known as Ogon, and he has sworn a solemn oath of loyalty to the tribe's royal leader, Princess Dhianeila.
In terms of personality, Iolaous initially presents a composed and mature exterior befitting his rank, but he is also known to be uptight and easily angered. Despite this, he possesses a deeply caring and gentle nature that becomes more apparent over time. Age, the protagonist, fittingly describes him as resembling a powerful yet gentle wind. His motivations are closely tied to his sense of duty and his personal affections. He is fiercely loyal to Princess Dhianeila, for whom he harbors romantic feelings, and this devotion is a primary driver of his actions. This is comically underscored by his secret, private collection of holographic pictures of the princess.
Iolaous's role in the story is multifaceted. He begins as a skeptical and somewhat jealous antagonist to the series' hero, Age. Iolaous is wary of the uncivilized boy who suddenly appears and captures the princess's attention, and his pride as an ace pilot is challenged by Age's overwhelming power as a Nodos, a titanic being. However, this initial animosity quickly fades as he warms to Age, and he develops into one of the protagonist's most reliable friends and allies. Beyond his duties as a captain of the guard and a fighter pilot, he frequently acts as a chaperon and guide to Age, helping the feral youth understand the norms of human society. Later in the narrative, he becomes a key protector of Dhianeila, even overcoming the mystical barrier that usually prevents men from being near her, implying the purity of his own heart.
His key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Age evolves from jealousy to a profound friendship, with the two becoming a dependable pair in battle and daily life. His unspoken love for Dhianeila is a constant, fueling his courage and his initial resentment toward Age. He also has a relationship with his twin sisters, Mail and Tail, who are also members of the Argonaut crew and are known to tease him about his crush on the princess. By the end of the series, there are indications that he develops a closer, possibly romantic, relationship with Aneasha, Dhianeila's lady-in-waiting and a woman he has known for a long time.
Iolaous possesses notable abilities that make him a formidable warrior. His most distinct power is teleportation. He can teleport himself and, by touching them, another person over vast distances, capable of jumping from a ship in orbit down to a planet's surface. This ability is contingent on the other person being mentally willing to accept the transport. His personal mecha is also specially equipped with an engine that allows it to teleport, and in dire circumstances, he can use this function to transport other friendly mechs along with his own, though doing so demands immense energy and can leave him unconscious for a period afterward. The character is named after Iolaus, the divine hero from Greek mythology who was the faithful charioteer and companion to Heracles, which mirrors his role as the steadfast squire to the powerful Age.
