Description
Hayate Ayasaki is a sixteen-year-old boy who serves as the butler of the Sanzenin family, the central protagonist of his story. His life has been defined by hardship from a very young age, having been forced to work a variety of odd jobs since he was eight years old to support his parents' destructive habits. His father refuses to get a job, while his mother is a compulsive gambler. The inevitable result of this upbringing was bankruptcy. On Christmas Eve, his parents abandoned him, leaving him with an enormous debt of 156,804,000 yen to the yakuza as a parting gift, planning to sell his organs to ease their financial burden.
Desperate and with no other options, Hayate conceived a plan to kidnap someone for ransom. He came across a wealthy young girl named Nagi Sanzenin and told her he would kidnap her. In a critical misunderstanding, Nagi misinterpreted his words as a confession of love. Before any kidnapping could occur, Nagi was taken by other criminals, and Hayate ended up rescuing her. In gratitude, Nagi paid off his debt and hired him as her personal butler, beginning his new life.
In terms of personality, Hayate is exceptionally selfless and generous, consistently placing the needs of others above his own well-being, even to the point of harming himself. He is a diligent and extremely hard worker, approaching all his duties with a level of competence that belies his age. He is highly independent and possesses a wide range of practical skills, from cooking and housekeeping to more unusual talents like identifying counterfeit art, a skill learned from one of his father's past cons. He is also a proficient violinist. Despite his dire circumstances and a history of being let down by adults, he maintains a resilient, outwardly positive demeanor, though this often masks deep-seated emotional scars. He has a well-documented tendency to be dense and oblivious when it comes to romantic feelings, frequently misunderstanding the affections of the many girls who become interested in him. This is partly due to his innocent nature and a lack of experience with such emotions, as well as a belief instilled in him from a young age that he is unworthy of a relationship until he is financially stable.
Hayate's role in the story is defined by his position as Nagi Sanzenin's butler. He is fiercely dedicated to protecting her from any threat, whether physical attacks from rival butlers, scheming relatives, or more outlandish dangers like giant robots. He manages the household duties, deals with Nagi's whims, and accompanies her to school at Hakuo Academy. His driving motivation is to repay his debt and serve Nagi faithfully, as she gave him a purpose and a home when he had nothing. He has stated his resolve to continue as her butler until she is a happily grown and independent young mistress.
His key relationships are numerous and complex. With his mistress, Nagi Sanzenin, his feelings are primarily those of loyalty and a sense of duty, though a deep bond of trust and care has grown between them. He is completely oblivious to her romantic feelings for him. He shares a close friendship and mutual respect with Maria, the former head maid of the Sanzenin estate, and finds himself frequently caught in awkward situations with his classmate and student council president, Hinagiku Katsura, for whom he harbors a certain admiration. He also has a group of friends including Ayumu Nishizawa, his former classmate who has a crush on him, and the wealthy Sakuya Aizawa and Isumi Saginomiya. The most significant and painful relationship from his past is with Athena Tennousu. Ten years prior, Hayate met Athena, who became his first love and mentor. She was the one who unlocked his body's potential, granting him his superhuman strength, and taught him swordsmanship and the proper way to be a butler. Their relationship ended in a bitter falling out, largely because Hayate's parents stole and pawned an engagement ring she had given him. This event left Hayate with lasting emotional wounds and a conviction that he must be economically self-sufficient before he can love someone. He has admitted that he was, and perhaps still is, in love with Athena.
Throughout the story, Hayate undergoes significant development. He begins as a boy who feels hated and worthless, believing only children could ever like him. His time with Nagi and the others slowly helps him form genuine connections and trust in people again. He is forced to confront his traumatic past, particularly when Athena re-enters his life, and he must make difficult choices regarding his feelings and his duties. While he remains financially destitute and unlucky, he grows more confident in his role and his own self-worth, learning that his value is not tied to money but to his actions and the bonds he has formed.
Notably, Hayate lives up to the title of "combat butler" with an arsenal of superhuman abilities. He possesses tremendous strength, speed, reflexes, and endurance, allowing him to perform feats far beyond normal human limits. He has demonstrated the ability to wield a heavy machine gun like an MG3 with one hand, dodge bullets, parry sword strikes with two fingers, and engage in combat with a wide variety of enemies. His training with a sword is a particular specialty. This physical prowess is a result of both his horrific childhood of manual labor and a magical enhancement performed by Athena to unlock his body's full potential. Despite his immense power, he is known for his terrible luck, which is so profound it is often remarked upon by other characters as a defining trait.
