Description
Ayano Terada, more widely known by her professional name Otose, is the formidable owner of the Snack Otose bar and the landlady of the Yorozuya headquarters in the Kabuki District. Her real name is Terada Ayano, with Otose being a name she uses for her business. As one of the Four Devas of Kabuki District, she holds a position of immense respect and influence, often referred to as the Empress or godmother of the area.

In her youth, Ayano was celebrated as a great beauty and a popular waitress at a tea shop, where her kind and friendly nature drew many admirers. She grew up alongside Doromizu Jirochou, whom she constantly guided away from trouble, a role she continued even as he entered the world of organized crime. Her life became intertwined with two men who both loved her: her future husband, the principled lawman Terada Tatsugorou, and her childhood friend Jirochou. Jirochou stepped aside, believing Tatsugorou would make her happier, and Tatsugorou and Ayano were married. When the war against the Amanto broke out, both men joined the fight as Joui patriots. Tatsugorou was killed in the war, taking a bullet meant for Jirochou, who then abandoned his own family to return and protect the town and Ayano as his final promise to his fallen friend.

A defining moment in her life occurred on a snowy day while visiting her husband's grave. She encountered a starving and desperate Gintoki Sakata, a young soldier after the war. In exchange for the food offerings she had brought for her deceased husband, a starving Gintoki vowed he would never forget the debt and would protect her in her husband's place. This act of compassion led to Ayano becoming Gintoki's landlady, allowing him to open the Yorozuya odd-jobs business in the space above her bar.

On the surface, Ayano presents a stern and intimidating facade, often seen with a harsh expression and a blunt, no-nonsense way of speaking. She is notoriously strict about collecting rent from Gintoki, who is perpetually late on payments, and frequently sends her employees, Tama or Catherine, to demand it. However, this stern exterior masks a deeply compassionate and forgiving personality. She is a maternal figure to the chaotic Yorozuya family, viewing Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura as her own children and Sadaharu as part of the family. Her kindness is so well-known that it is said it would be easier to count the people in Kabuki District who have not been indebted to her at some point. This generosity sometimes leads to her being taken advantage of, but she accepts this as part of who she is.

Her key relationships form the core of her character. Her bond with Gintoki is one of mutual, if unspoken, respect and familial love, with her often reducing his rent when he does something good, acting as a classic tsundere. She treats her employees, the former thief Catherine and the robot Tama, as daughters, giving them a place to belong. Her connection to Jirochou is complex, rooted in childhood friendship and a past romantic potential, which becomes the central focus of the serious Four Devas arc. In this story, she is gravely injured by him, an act that sends the entire district into a state of war and forces her surrogate family to fight for her honor. Despite her age, she possesses surprising physical abilities, such as easily catching a shuriken thrown by the skilled ninja Ayame Sarutobi, and her sheer presence and commanding aura are enough to intimidate powerful figures like the government official Matsudaira. Her true power, however, lies not in physical strength but in the deep personal loyalty she commands from nearly everyone in the district, a power built entirely on human connection rather than factional armies. Throughout the series, she remains a steadfast pillar of the community, its protective mother, and the emotional anchor for the Yorozuya.
