Description
Ayame Sarutobi, often called Saa-chan or Sacchan, is a character whose outward eccentricities mask a deep well of loyalty and professional skill. A kunoichi by training and an assassin by trade, she is perhaps best known for her extreme, obsessive infatuation with the protagonist, Sakata Gintoki. Her background is rooted in the shogunate's elite intelligence unit, the Oniwabanshuu, where she trained from childhood under the tutelage of Hattori Zenzou's father. This early life forged powerful bonds with her fellow trainees, including Zenzou himself and the future shogun, Tokugawa Shigeshige, creating a connection to the highest echelons of the government that would prove significant later. Following the Oniwabanshuu's dissolution, she continued to work as a freelance assassin, a profession she balances with a part-time job at the Kunoichi Cafe, all the while keeping a close watch on the activities of Kabukicho.
Physically, Ayame is a tall young woman with long, light purple hair, grey eyes, and a distinctive beauty mark beneath her right eye. Her most defining feature, however, is her pair of red-framed glasses, which she inherited from her late grandmother. She suffers from extreme myopia; without her glasses, her vision is so profoundly impaired that she can barely distinguish living beings from inanimate objects, and even her hearing and sense of touch seem dulled. This severe weakness is a constant source of both comedy and genuine peril, as her missions can go disastrously wrong the moment her spectacles are lost or broken.
Her personality is a study in stark contrasts. On the job, Ayame can be a consummate professional, possessing a strong sense of justice and unwavering dedication to her principles, refusing to act solely for monetary gain. She demonstrates exceptional bravery and tenacity in serious situations, such as during the Shogun Assassination Arc, where she rejoins her former comrades to protect the shogun and fights fiercely against powerful enemies. Yet, in her personal life, especially around Gintoki, she undergoes a complete transformation. Her infatuation with him began when he saw through her lies and saved her regardless, an act that sparked a fervent, obsessive love. This affection manifests as relentless stalking, a habit so notorious that it rivals that of the Shinsengumi's commander, Kondou Isao. Furthermore, she is an extreme masochist who derives pleasure from Gintoki's verbal abuse and physical violence, interpreting his harsh insults and the swings of his wooden sword as signs of affection. This "lovestruck pig mode" is exclusively reserved for him; with most other men, particularly Zenzou, she adopts a sadistic, dominant persona.
Her key relationships are as complex as her personality. Her bond with Gintoki is the central axis of her life, a dynamic of pursuer and pursued that is both comedic and, on rare occasions, genuinely touching. Her relationship with her childhood friend Hattori Zenzou is one of perpetual torment; she delights in exploiting his weakness, most infamously by attacking his hemorrhoids with various implements. However, this surface cruelty belies a deep-seated respect and loyalty, as she will unflinchingly risk her life to save him when he is in genuine danger. She views Shimura Tae and the Hyakka captain Tsukuyo as her primary romantic rivals, leading to frequent, petty squabbles. Despite this, moments of crisis reveal an underlying camaraderie and genuine care between them, suggesting a sisterly bond beneath the competitive surface.
Throughout the series, Ayame shows subtle but significant development. While her core obsession remains a constant source of humor, her capabilities and reliability as a ninja are increasingly showcased in serious story arcs. The "Glasses Arc" (episodes 222-224) provides a poignant exploration of her character, as Gintoki accidentally destroys her precious glasses. Her desperate quest to replace them and her insistence on using a poorly fitting substitute, simply because Gintoki chose them, highlights the depth of her attachment to him and the emotional value she places on seemingly trivial objects. This arc underscores that her feelings, however warped in their expression, are deeply rooted and sincere.
In terms of abilities, Ayame is a highly skilled ninja despite her visual impairment. Her physical prowess includes remarkable agility, speed, and the ability to move stealthily across the rooftops of Edo. She is exceptionally proficient with thrown weapons, most notably the kunai, and can even launch them with surprising accuracy without her glasses. Her fighting style is unorthodox, incorporating a unique and sticky weapon: natto, or fermented soybeans, which she also loves to eat. She can use the gooey strands to trap opponents or obscure their vision. On one memorable occasion, her glasses were temporarily upgraded by the inventor Hiraga Gengai with various combat functions, including a laser and a targeting system, culminating in an "Engel Mode" that allowed a swarm of glasses to fight on her behalf. However, this enhancement was not permanent. Ultimately, Ayame Sarutobi is a character who defies simple categorization: a devoted friend, a fearsome warrior, and a thoroughly devoted, if thoroughly unconventional, lover.
