Description
Akira Okuzaki is a student at Fuuka Academy, attending the middle school division and serving as the roommate and classmate of Takumi Tokiha. Born on May 12, Akira is thirteen years old, stands 149 centimeters tall, and has A-type blood. Akira presents as a boy and is considered one of the cutest male students at the school, a disguise maintained to allow for secret activities as a kunoichi, or female ninja. This mission was assigned by Akira's father, who is the head of the Okuzaki clan, with the purpose of gathering information on HiME. Having been raised with a traditionally masculine education from a young age, Akira's manner of speech, behavior, and overall demeanor are all very masculine, contributing to the success of this disguise.
In terms of personality, Akira is strong-willed, forceful, and extremely private, going so far as to set up a curtain and strict boundaries to separate sides of the shared room. Akira is generally calm, not prone to panic, and can be very direct and blunt when speaking. There is a notable dislike for people who are effeminate or weak-willed, which initially creates a cold attitude toward the kinder and more gentle Takumi. However, over time, genuine feelings for Takumi begin to develop, leading to a classic tsundere demeanor where Akira often becomes flustered and denies these emotions, particularly blushing at his smile. Despite the tough exterior, Akira is a talented artist, finding that drawing helps to calm down, and a sketchbook filled with drawings of Takumi provides a glimpse into these hidden feelings.
Akira's role in the story is deeply connected to the secret identity as both a female ninja and one of the HiME. The truth begins to unravel when Takumi is attacked by an Orphan, a type of monster, after Akira is sent to buy ingredients for a birthday cake. A masked ninja rescues him, and later, while tending to a wound from that battle, Akira is seen disrobing, revealing not only the injury but also the female form and the HiME mark on the upper right back. The secret is fully discovered by Takumi when he accidentally walks in on Akira after a shower. While protocol demands that anyone who learns the secret must be killed, Akira finds this impossible to do to Takumi and instead swears him to silence.
The relationship with Takumi Tokiha is the most significant in Akira's development. What begins as annoyance at his soft nature gradually transforms into a deep and protective bond. When Nao Yuuki attempts to abduct Takumi as revenge against his sister, Mai, Akira fiercely intervenes, using the Child, Gennai, to escape with him into the forest. In a moment of crisis when Takumi expresses a desire to die rather than undergo surgery for his heart condition, Akira harshly rebukes him, indirectly confessing feelings and helping to strengthen his will to live. Later, during a battle in the forest, Akira's Child is destroyed, and because a HiME's most important person is linked to the Child's life force, Takumi dies as well. A distraught Akira collapses and is taken away by members of the clan. However, in the final events of the story, Mashiro revives the fallen HiME and their most important people, restoring Takumi to life. After participating in the final battle, Akira accompanies Takumi to America, where he receives the needed surgery for his heart.
As a HiME, Akira wields a unique Element and commands a Child. The Element is a double-bladed kunai that can be summoned with the word on, and Akira is also seen using smaller shuriken as throwing weapons. The kunai has the special ability to pin an enemy's shadow to the ground, immobilizing them. The Child, named Gennai, is a gigantic frog or toad-like creature. Its back is equipped with massive spotlights that can blind opponents, and its primary attack is named Jigoku Gama. This attack involves Gennai launching a large spiked ball or a spiked tongue from its mouth to pierce the enemy after they have been paralyzed. Gennai can be summoned with a long incantation that incorporates the Kuji-in, or nine hand seals. Beyond these HiME-specific powers, Akira is highly adept in various ninjutsu arts and is a skilled combatant with kunai as the primary weapon.
