Nao Yuuki is a student at Fuka Academy and one of the HiME, girls granted the power to materialize weapons and summon powerful familiars known as Children. She is a fourteen-year-old middle school student with medium-length red hair and green eyes. Her background is marked by hardship; her mother was hospitalized and bedridden for an extended period after a violent robbery that left Nao effectively orphaned at a young age. This traumatic event is the foundation of her deep-seated mistrust and hatred of men, whom she views as predatory and untrustworthy.

Nao Yuuki possesses a morally ambivalent and often cruel personality. She is cunning, assertive, and fiercely independent, prioritizing her own survival and interests above all else. She enjoys tormenting others, particularly her fellow HiME Natsuki Kuga, and takes pleasure in manipulating people. She presents a tough, confrontational exterior, using intimidation and deliberate cruelty to keep others at a distance. Her primary motivation is self-preservation, driven by a belief that she can only rely on herself. She despises weakness and vulnerability, having learned that depending on others leads to pain.

In the story, Nao Yuuki initially operates alone, using her HiME powers to entrap and rob men who attempt to take advantage of her, a scheme reminiscent of a sting operation that makes use of the alias Juliet. Her role is that of an antagonist and a foil to the more cooperative HiME like Mai Tokiha and Natsuki Kuga. After a misunderstanding leads the other HiME to believe she seriously injured the HiME Yukariko Sanada, they retaliate and severely wound her, blinding her in one eye. This event officially turns her into an antagonist, vowing revenge against all the other HiME. She later attempts to harm Mai Tokihas younger brother, Takumi, to inflict the same pain of loss on Mai that she herself experienced. Throughout these conflicts, she acts out of a bitter sense of grievance and a desire to make others feel the loneliness she carries.

Key relationships define her character arc. Her most significant connection is to Natsuki Kuga, whom she alternately torments and competes with, but who ultimately becomes the person most able to understand her. Natsukis defense of Nao even after being captured shows a recognition of their parallel circumstances. Her relationship with Mai Tokiha is defined by resentment, as Nao envies Mai for having people who care for her despite a similarly tragic past. Her most important person, the person whose well-being is tied to her Childs existence, is her hospitalized mother, a secret she guards closely.

Nao Yuukis development is a journey from bitter isolation to reluctant connection. After her Child, Julia, is destroyed by Shizuru Fujinos Child, her mother dies as a result of that destruction, causing her a devastating emotional breakdown. She is later saved from a lynch mob of her former robbery victims by the power of the festival, which restores both her powers and her mothers health, and heals her eye. Witnessing this, and the selfless actions of the other HiME, allows her to put aside her vendetta and join them to destroy the HiME Star and end the festival. Following the crisis, she abandons her life of crime and takes on the unexpected role of a nun at the Fuka Academy church alongside the android Miyu Greer, a choice that reflects a measure of peace and a desire for a fresh start.

Notable abilities stem from her HiME powers. Her element takes the form of metal claws with long, sharp red nails that appear on her hands. From these claws, she can generate and control razor-sharp wires or threads that are strong enough to cut through steel and can be used to ensnare, trap, or slice opponents. Her Child is Julia, a giant arachnid-like creature with a humanoid female face and a scorpions tail. Julia can fire sticky webbing to immobilize enemies, strike with its venomous tail, and release a caustic fluid. The combination of Naos deceptive, wire-based combat and Julias controlling attacks makes her a formidable and dangerous opponent.
