Description
Isaak Fernand von Kämpfer, also known by the epithet Panzer Magier, is a significant antagonist and a high-ranking member of the Rosenkreuz Orden in the anime Trinity Blood. His role is deeply intertwined with the organization's leadership and its most powerful operative, Cain Knightlord.

Regarding his background, Isaak is a figure shrouded in considerable mystery, having operated under many aliases over a long period. He was once a student at London University under the name Isaac Butler. It is known that he is the inventor responsible for creating and maintaining Cain Knightlord's current artificial body, which had been permanently damaged in a conflict with Cain's siblings, Abel and Seth Nightlord, nine hundred years prior to the main events of the story. Despite his long history, he is not a Methuselah, or vampire; he is a Terran (a human). However, he is far from a normal human, possessing immortality that allows him to regenerate and resurrect from fatal injuries within minutes, a process that is never fully explained but appears connected to a mysterious black liquid that functions as his shadow. His long life has led to speculation that he might be the legendary Xu Fu, a figure from ancient history who sought the elixir of life.

In terms of personality, Isaak is portrayed as a composed, intellectual, and somewhat theatrical individual. He is often seen enjoying cigarillos and quoting classic works of literature, suggesting a refined and cultured demeanor that contrasts sharply with his often brutal actions. He prefers to remain in the background, rarely appearing in public and letting others, such as his protege Dietrich von Lohengrin, carry out his intricate plans. When he does take to the field personally, he displays an excellent and ruthless battle prowess, showing that his calm exterior masks a deadly and formidable combatant.

His primary motivation remains intentionally obscure. While he serves the Rosenkreuz Orden and its goals, his true reasons for his deep loyalty to Cain and his involvement in the order's schemes are never fully revealed. His actions are driven by a long-standing, inscrutable agenda that has unfolded over centuries.

In the story, Isaak serves as a major force behind the scenes. He is one of the leaders of the Rosenkreuz Orden alongside Cain Knightlord, and together they orchestrate many of the events that threaten the fragile peace between the Terran and Methuselah empires. His most notable actions include his direct involvement in major attacks, such as piloting the Orden's massive airship during an assault on the city of Londinium in Albion.

His key relationships are central to the plot. He has a direct, master-servant, and mentor-student relationship with Dietrich von Lohengrin, having served as his tutor. Under Isaak's tutelage, Dietrich gained much of the knowledge he uses to create his deadly inventions like the Autojägers and manipulate his biowires. His most important relationship is with Cain Knightlord, for whom he acts as a caretaker, supporter, and the engineer who continually rebuilds and sustains Cain's damaged physical form.

Throughout the narrative, Isaak shows little in the way of personal development or change. He is an ancient, static figure whose capabilities and role are fully formed from the time he is introduced. He is a constant, powerful obstacle whose demise comes not from a change of heart but from being presumably killed in the explosion when his airship is destroyed by the combined forces of the Church and Albion.

Isaak possesses a wide array of notable abilities, largely derived from his mastery of Lost Technology. His primary offensive weapon is the Arrow of Belial, a massive sphere of light that can fire a multitude of powerful energy bolts at his enemies. For defense, he can project a nearly impenetrable electromagnetic barrier around his body called the Shield of Asmoday, which can block almost any assault. His body is itself a weapon; his hair is made of thin mono-carbon fibers that are strong enough to cut through diamond. He can also summon artificial demons into battle, including small, dwarf-like creatures called Schatten Kobolds that hide within his shadow, and monstrous, worm-like Knomes that can tunnel through the ground. Furthermore, his body contains a chip that grants him special abilities, including the inability to feel pain, although the source of his rapid resurrection appears linked to the black-liquid shadow rather than this chip.
