Description
Kate Scott, also known by the codename Iron Maiden, is a character who serves as a dispatched executive officer of the AX, a special operations division within the Vatican's Ministry of Holy Affairs. She holds the rank of captain of the AX air battleship known as the Iron Maiden, and later its successor, the Iron Maiden II. In addition to her duties aboard the ship, she acts as a personal secretary to Cardinal Caterina Sforza, the Secretary of State.
Kate is one of the founding members of the AX. Her background reveals that she originally came from Albion, and she first met Caterina Sforza during their time together in college. Approximately ten years prior to the main events of the story, she was severely injured while protecting Caterina from an attack by the Knights. The injuries resulted in Kate entering a comatose, vegetative state. To preserve her, Professor William Walter Wordsworth, a fellow native of Albion and a close friend, integrated her brain into the system of the newly completed aerial battleship, the Iron Maiden. As a result, her physical body lies in a coma while her consciousness is projected as a hologram through advanced technology, essentially existing as an artificial intelligence combined with the ship's computer. The novels suggest that the accident leading to her condition was caused by an attack from Susan von Scorzeny, a pilot for the Rosenkreuz Orden known as the Red Baroness.
In terms of personality, Kate is generally characterized as a benevolent and meticulous individual who is kind to most people. Her smile is described as having a calming effect, and she has a pleasant, comforting presence. She is known for her hobby of blending and preparing herbal tea, a skill for which she is well-regarded among the other AX agents, including Cardinal Caterina. However, despite her usually gentle demeanor, when angered she can be terrifying. She is also the person most often tasked with managing the aftermath of Abel Nightroad's various incidents, a job she finds frustrating yet necessary. While she is friendly with most people, she notably does not get along well with her fellow agent Leon Garcia de Asturias. Kate is also acknowledged to be exceptionally interested in women.
Her primary role within the story is one of support and coordination. Unlike other field agents, she rarely engages in direct combat herself, instead overseeing missions from within the Iron Maiden. She coordinates the movements of the other agents, relays critical information to them through their communication earpieces, and handles extensive amounts of paperwork and procedures for the organization. She is often described as being very busy due to the demands of her multiple roles as ship captain, mission coordinator, and cardinal's secretary. Her holographic form allows her to appear in various locations as needed, a capability made possible by Professor Wordsworth's inventions.
Regarding her development, Kate is depicted as a stable and reliable presence, having adapted to her unique condition as a holographic entity with her core personality and sense of duty intact. Her notable abilities are not centered on physical combat but on her strategic oversight and technical integration. As the Iron Maidens intelligent hub, she can project her holographic form anywhere within her operational range. She is also a highly skilled administrator and coordinator. Her physical appearance is characterized by long blond hair and a notable mole on her cheek.
