Description
Colonel Mary Spencer, also known by the chilling epithet Bloody Mary, is a character from the anime and manga Trinity Blood, though her role and backstory differ significantly between the two adaptations. In the original source material of the novels and manga, she is a far more complex and tragic figure. She holds the rank of Colonel in the Albion Navy and is the illegitimate daughter of the late Crown Prince Gilbert, making her the secret half-sister of the protagonist, Esther Blanchett, and a granddaughter of the reigning Queen Bridget II. Despite her royal blood, her status as a child born out of wedlock bars her from any legitimate claim to the throne.
Mary is a striking figure, a beautiful young woman with orange hair typically tied up and distinctive baby blue eyes, though her hair color is depicted as dark brown in the anime. Her reputation precedes her, as the nickname Bloody Mary was earned for her brutal suppression of the Belfast Rebellion, where it is said she slaughtered rebels who had already surrendered. She carries this name with a composed and unflinching demeanor, appearing as a confident and consummate military officer who is not easily intimidated by political adversaries like the House of Lords. This hard exterior, however, conceals a more nuanced personality. She is shown to be genuinely supportive and surprisingly gentle with those she cares for, most notably her half-sister Esther and her close friend and distant cousin, the scandal-prone Duke Jane Judith Jocelyn.
Mary’s motivations are deeply rooted in a troubled past. Orphaned at a young age after the death of both her parents, she was largely neglected by her grandmother, the Queen, who held little affection for her due to the circumstances of her birth. Growing up in isolation within the royal court, she developed a profound aversion to the corruption and decadence of the Albion nobility and became convinced that only a harsh, absolute reform could save her kingdom. Her desire for power is not purely selfish ambition, but a twisted sense of duty to heal a nation she believes is rotting from within. This conviction drives her down a dark path, as she secretly administers the poison thallium to her own grandmother and begins secretly building a private army of soldiers she had officially declared dead, preparing for a coup d'état.
In the story’s Throne of Roses arc, Mary is initially assigned as the personal bodyguard to Esther when the young nun arrives in Albion as the Lady Saint. Unbeknownst to Esther, she is being protected by her own sister, a fact Mary keeps hidden as she grapples with her initial hostility and growing affection for her newfound relative. Her role evolves from a potential antagonist plotting to secure the throne for herself to a conflicted figure who decides to instead place Esther on the throne, intending to serve as the power behind it. This plan unravels due to the intervention of the Vatican’s AX agency and her best friend Jane, who uncovers the truth about the Queen’s poisoning. Ultimately, in a final act of tragic redemption, Mary is not killed by her enemies but is confronted and absorbed by the powerful vampire Cain Nightlord, who she attempts to protect Esther from.
Throughout her journey, Mary demonstrates formidable abilities. She is a highly skilled swordswoman who is never without her rapier, and is also proficient with a pistol. Her combat prowess is such that, when piloting a reinforced mech suit, she is able to hold her own against elite Vatican warriors like Brother Petros Orsini and even fight on par with the superhuman android Tres Iqus. Her narrative arc, which is largely absent from the simplified anime version where she appears merely as a naval officer, is one of a tragic villain driven by love for her country and a desperate need for belonging, whose extreme methods ultimately lead to her downfall and a final, selfless act of heroism.
