Description
Fye D. Flowright, also known as Fai D. Flourite, is a powerful magician and a central member of the group traveling across dimensions in search of Princess Sakura's lost memories. His real name is Yuui, and he was born as a prince in the country of Valeria alongside his identical twin brother, Fai. In Valeria, the birth of twins was considered a terrible omen, and the brothers were subjected to immense suffering because of it. The king of Valeria locked them in separate parts of a tower within a valley, isolated from the world and where magic was ineffective. After many years and the destruction of the entire kingdom, a dimensional witch named Fei-Wang Reed appeared and offered to free only one of them. Fai, the twin brother, chose to save Yuui, resulting in his own death. Fei-Wang then manipulated Yuui’s memories, making him believe he had chosen his own freedom over his brother’s life. To gain the power to possibly revive his brother, Yuui became Fei-Wang’s pawn and was cursed. He also took his deceased brother’s name for himself, becoming Fai.
Fai was later found by King Ashura of the country of Celes, who took him in and gave him the last name Flourite, after a precious stone. Ashura helped suppress Fai’s rapidly growing magical power with a magical tattoo on his back and forbade him from using magic. However, Fai eventually learned that Ashura’s true intention was to be killed by one of Fai’s curses, as the king’s own magical power grew when he killed others. Unable to kill his protector, Fai instead sealed the king in an eternal sleep. To prevent ever having to face Ashura again, he used his own magic to travel to the shop of the dimension witch Yūko Ichihara, seeking to flee to other worlds.
On the surface, Fai presents a cheerful, easygoing, and carefree personality, often teasing his gruff companion Kurogane with childish nicknames. He is polite, cooperative, and seems to take little seriously. Despite this outward persona, he is deeply emotionally wounded by his tragic past. His cheerfulness is a carefully constructed facade to hide his profound sadness and to keep others at a distance, as he has resolved never to allow himself to get close to anyone again. He is a skilled liar and is extremely adept at dodging personal questions or changing the subject. His initial motivations are primarily to escape his own world and follow Fei-Wang’s plan, which includes acting as an agent for the villain. He does not value his own life highly, a trait that Kurogane frequently notices and criticizes.
As the story progresses, Fai’s role shifts from a mysterious ally to a man forced to confront his past. His key relationships become the catalyst for his change. Despite his efforts to remain distant, he grows attached to Syaoran and Sakura, and he especially forms a deep bond with Kurogane. In the Tokyo arc, Fai is gravely injured, losing one of his eyes and the source of half his magic to a clone of Syaoran. To save his life, he is turned into a vampire and becomes dependent on drinking Kurogane’s blood to survive. This transformation deepens their connection, as Kurogane becomes his "prey" and is fiercely determined to protect him. After this event, Fai’s personality becomes noticeably more solemn and cold for a period, before eventually settling back into a warmer, more genuine version of his original self.
Fai is an exceptionally powerful sorcerer. His magical abilities are tied to his blue eyes, which grant him a greatly extended lifespan. His magic is almost exclusively destructive in nature, and he is incapable of performing healing spells. He is a skilled combatant who prefers to dodge attacks or use ranged weapons like staffs, darts, or crossbows rather than fight directly. He carries two of Sakura’s memory-feathers: one he uses to create a being named Chii, and the other is the first feather the group finds on their journey. His abilities are hampered by several curses placed upon him by Fei-Wang, including one that compels him to kill any magician more powerful than himself. After losing his eye, he effectively has only half of his original power. His transformation into a vampire grants him accelerated healing and a slowed aging process, but it also leaves him reliant on blood.
