Description
Fay D. Flourite, also known as Fai D. Flowright and born as Yuui, is a powerful magician and one of the central characters in the narrative. He originally hails from the country of Celes, where he was known as the highest-ranked mage. His true origin, however, lies in the now-destroyed country of Valeria, where he was born as a prince alongside his twin brother, also named Fai. In Valeria, the birth of twins was considered a terrible omen, leading to a series of misfortunes that culminated in the death of their parents and the descent of the king into madness. The king imprisoned the young twins and eventually destroyed the entire kingdom. The wizard Fei-Wang Reed appeared and offered a cruel choice: only one could go free. Fai chose to save his brother Yuui, resulting in his own death. Fei-Wang then altered Yuui's memories to make him believe he had selfishly chosen his own life over his brother's. He placed two deadly curses on Yuui and promised to resurrect his lost twin if he became a pawn. Following this trauma, Yuui was found and taken in by King Ashura of Celes, who gave him a new name, Fai, and a magical tattoo on his back to suppress his overwhelming powers. Fearing the curses and King Ashura's mysterious intentions, Fai eventually sealed the king in an eternal slumber and fled his world.

On the surface, Fai presents the image of a cheerful, good-natured, and carefree individual. He is often seen smiling and using silly nicknames for his companions, such as calling Kurogane Kuro-rin or Kuro-tan. He acts playful and sometimes foolish, but this persona is a carefully constructed mask. Beneath this lighthearted exterior lies a deeply unhappy and emotionally distant person. Fai carries a profound emotional burden because of his tragic past and the curses placed upon him. He values his own life very little and often does not bother to fight hard for his own survival, only showing true determination when someone he cares for is in danger. Because of his fear of getting others involved with his personal problems and curses, he is emotionally distant and refuses to let anyone become too close to him. Despite this, his companions, especially the perceptive Kurogane, often sense the disguise and the sadness he hides.

Fai's primary motivation at the start of the journey is to never return to Celes, as he fears King Ashura awakening and pursuing him across dimensions. He arrives at the shop of the dimension witch Yuuko by his own magical power, intending to have her grant this wish. When the price proves too high, he instead joins Syaoran, Sakura, and Kurogane on their quest to collect the feathers of Sakura's memories, using the white creature Mokona to travel between worlds. Throughout the journey, Fai acts as a powerful and perceptive ally, though his actions are often guided by his secret role as Fei-Wang Reed's unwitting agent. His role in the story evolves from the enigmatic mage fleeing his past to a central figure whose secrets and curses become a major driving force of the narrative, especially when the group is forced to confront the truth in his home world of Celes.

Fai's relationships with the other characters are complex and evolve significantly over the course of the story. His most notable dynamic is with Kurogane, a gruff ninja from Japan. Fai constantly teases Kurogane, who in turn is annoyed by Fai's cheerful demeanor but is also the first to see through his facade. Kurogane senses Fai's emotional distance and lack of self-worth, and he confronts him about it, vowing to protect him despite Fai's protests. Their bond is dramatically strengthened when Fai is mortally wounded by a clone of Syaoran. Kurogane refuses to let him die, and as a result, Fai is turned into a vampire who can only survive by drinking Kurogane's blood. This act forces a deep, life-dependent connection between them, and for a time, Fai grows colder and more solemn, using Kurogane's real name to try and distance himself again. Ultimately, this bond becomes one of the most pivotal in the series, representing Fai's struggle between his fear of attachment and his need for connection. He also forms strong attachments to Syaoran and Sakura, initially against his own will. He worries for their safety and is willing to break his personal vows and use his magic to protect them, which shows his growing care for the young pair. King Ashura, his protector in Celes, represents a complicated figure of both safety and impending doom, as Fai eventually learned that Ashura's true desire was to be killed by Fai's first curse.

Fai undergoes a profound transformation throughout the narrative. He begins as a man hiding behind a smile and fleeing a past he cannot confront. When the group travels to Tokyo, a clone of Syaoran tears out and consumes Fai's left eye, which is the source of half his magical power. Brought to the brink of death, Fai wishes to die, believing that his death would also destroy the portion of his magic now stolen by the clone. Kurogane, however, forces him to live by transforming him into a vampire, an act that leaves Fai dependent on Kurogane for survival. Following this traumatic event, Fai abandons his cheerful persona, becoming markedly colder, more solemn, and formal with his companions. He confesses to Yuuko that he has grown too close to them and has crossed the line he had drawn for himself. Later, when the group finally travels to Celes, the full truth of his past as Prince Yuui and the curses placed on him by Fei-Wang Reed are revealed. Facing his past directly, with his companions at his side, allows him to begin to heal. After the final resolution, he regains his lost eye and returns to a version of his former lighthearted self, but with a genuine smile, now free from the curses and secrets that had defined his existence. He ultimately chooses to continue traveling with Kurogane, the original Syaoran, and Mokona.

Fai possesses a number of notable abilities. He is an extremely powerful high-level magician, with his magic being sourced from the blue color of his eyes. This magic also grants him a greatly extended lifespan, making him many decades or centuries old despite his youthful appearance. He is a skilled fighter who can use weapons like a staff or a bow, but his true strength lies in his varied magical spells. He can create powerful protective shields, attack with great force, levitate, detect magic and barriers, and even transport himself between dimensions, though the latter requires significant power. A key limitation of his magic is that he cannot perform healing spells. He also made a personal vow not to use his magic after giving up his magical tattoo as a payment to Yuuko, though he later breaks this vow multiple times to protect his friends. After being turned into a vampire by Kamui's blood, Fai gains accelerated healing and regenerative abilities, but he must regularly drink Kurogane's blood to survive. As a vampire, he also develops other traits, such as the ability to extend his fingernails like talons. Over time, he eventually gives up the remaining portion of his magic to pay Yuuko for a new arm for Kurogane, but he later recovers his lost left eye and, with it, his full magical power.
