Description
Fei Wang Reed is the primary antagonist of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, a figure of immense magical power whose machinations serve as the central driving force behind the narrative's conflicts. He is established as a very distant relative of the legendary sorcerer Clow Reed, a connection that fundamentally shapes his identity and ambitions. While this lineage grants him extraordinary abilities, his existence is also implied to be something more than natural; it is suggested that he might be an artificial being or the very personification of a powerful wish left behind by Clow Reed, specifically the wish to revive the Dimension Witch, Yūko Ichihara. This origin casts him not merely as a descendant but as a manifestation of a desire that defies the fundamental laws of their universe.

Fei Wang Reed's personality is defined by a chilling ruthlessness, immense patience, and unwavering arrogance. He views all other beings, whether they are his own creations or innocent people, as nothing more than tools to be used and discarded in service of his singular goal. He operates from the shadows for much of the story, meticulously orchestrating events across multiple dimensions with a calm and calculated demeanor. His cruelty is profound and without remorse, as he is directly responsible for a litany of tragedies that befall the main characters, all engineered to serve his plan. He shows no hesitation in committing murder, with his confirmed victims including Kurogane's mother, his own assistant Xing Huo, and the real Fai. His arrogance stems from a conviction that he can succeed where even the great Clow Reed failed, believing himself to be superior and capable of bending reality to his will.

The core of Fei Wang Reed's motivation is to break the one unbreakable law of their universe: the prohibition against reviving the dead. His ultimate wish is to use this forbidden power to resurrect Yūko Ichihara, who has been frozen on the brink of death by Clow Reed's own wish. By achieving this, he aims to prove himself the superior magician and finally fulfill the dream that Clow could not. To accomplish this, he requires a specific and complex set of components. He needs the power hidden within the ruins of Clow Country, the soul of the real Princess Sakura, and a map of the dimensions gained by force. To obtain this map, he engineered the initial curse on Princess Sakura, scattering her memories across dimensions in the form of feathers. This forced her clone (and later the real one) to travel through countless worlds, causing her body to involuntarily record the path, thus creating the dimensional map he required.

His role in the story is that of the hidden puppet master, responsible for almost all of the main cast's suffering and for setting the entire plot in motion. He cursed Princess Sakura during her purification ceremony, an act that shattered her memories and created the feather-hunting quest. He created clones of both Syaoran and Sakura, sending the clone Syaoran on the journey while imprisoning the real Syaoran. He is also the one who placed the deadly curses on the magician Fai, forcing him to kill anyone more powerful than himself and threatening to destroy his entire world if he did not kill his adoptive father, King Ashura-ou. Similarly, his murder of Kurogane's mother was a deliberate act to set the swordsman on the path that would eventually lead him to join the group. Fei Wang orchestrated all these events to ensure the right people with the right motivations would gather together to aid clone Sakura on her journey, all unknowingly furthering his grand design.

His key relationships are defined by his opposition to others and his manipulation of them. He is the most direct enemy of the main group, including Syaoran, Sakura, Kurogane, and Fai, each of whom he has personally wronged. He holds deep animosity towards Yūko Ichihara and the memory of Clow Reed, viewing them as rivals and meddlers who interfere with his plans. He has a creator's disdain for his own creations, such as the clones of Syaoran and Sakura, and Xing Huo, whom he kills without hesitation when she betrays him. His relationship with the imprisoned real Syaoran is one of captor and captive, using his freedom as leverage to control his actions.

In terms of development, Fei Wang Reed remains a static character whose immense power and defining arrogance ultimately lead to his downfall. He does not undergo a personal transformation or redemption arc. Instead, his role in the narrative is to be the immovable obstacle that the other characters must overcome. His development is revealed through the gradual unveiling of his complex, multi-layered plan, which spans decades and multiple timelines. His end comes when his own schemes create a paradox he did not anticipate, specifically the fact that his clone creations become the real Syaoran's parents. This paradox, combined with the combined efforts of his enemies, leads to his defeat at the hands of Kurogane, who delivers the fatal blow after Fei Wang's logic has been shattered.

Fei Wang Reed possesses a vast array of notable abilities, placing him among the most powerful beings in the series. He has the power to travel across dimensions, a skill he uses to observe and interfere with the main group's journey. His magical prowess is extraordinary, allowing him to create life itself, as he did when he produced clones of Syaoran and Sakura, as well as the being Xing Huo. He can cast powerful and complex curses, such as the one that scattered Sakura's memories and the lethal curses placed upon Fai. Furthermore, he is able to manipulate time and space to a degree, hiding himself away in a "cut-off time" within the original timeline of Clow Country, allowing him to operate without detection for years.
