TV-Series
Description
Fye, also known as Fai D. Flourite, is a tall, slender man with short blonde hair and blue eyes. He is a mage from the magical country of Celes and becomes a key member of the group traveling across dimensions to collect the scattered memory feathers of Princess Sakura.
The name Fye is an adopted one. His true name is Yuui, and he was born in the country of Valeria as one of a pair of twins. The birth of twins was considered a terrible omen, a belief seemingly confirmed when the boys' father died and their mother committed suicide shortly after their birth. The twins were imprisoned in a tower within a deep valley where time does not flow, with Yuui at the base and his brother, whose name was Fai, at the top. After many years of suffering, the sorcerer Fei Wong Reed appeared and offered freedom to only one of them. Fai chose to save Yuui, sacrificing himself in the process. Wracked with a manufactured guilt that made him believe he had chosen his own survival over his brother's, Yuui accepted two curses from Fei Wong. He was eventually rescued by the king of the country of Celes, King Ashura, who took him in. Yuui then abandoned his original name and took his brother's, becoming Fye. Ashura gave him the last name Flourite, a precious mineral, and the title 'D', which signifies the highest level of magician in Celes.
On the surface, Fye presents a cheerful, carefree, and good-natured personality. He is often seen smiling and acts in a playful and energetic manner, frequently teasing his companion Kurogane with a series of ridiculous nicknames like "Kuro-rin" or "Kuro-tan". He is also polite and can be quite lazy, preferring easy work and showing a fondness for alcohol. Beneath this lighthearted exterior, however, Fye is emotionally distant and deeply burdened by his tragic past. His constant smile is a mask to hide his profound unhappiness and to keep others at a distance, as he values his own life very little and is terrified of forming close attachments. He is prone to lying about his abilities and his feelings, often deflecting serious questions with vague or misleading answers.
Fye's primary motivation is tied to the curses placed upon him by Fei Wong Reed. He is on a journey to fulfill these conditions, which he believes are necessary to eventually revive his dead twin brother. Because of his mission and his past trauma, he initially avoids meaningful bonds with his traveling companions, fearing he may be forced to harm them. He joins the group led by Syaoran, who is searching for Princess Sakura's memories, as a way to travel between worlds and achieve his own secret goals.
The most significant relationship Fye develops is with Kurogane, a skilled ninja from Japan. Their dynamic begins with Fye's incessant teasing, which masks a growing mutual respect and trust. This relationship becomes critical after Fye is gravely injured by a corrupted version of Syaoran, who steals one of Fye's eyes, the source of much of his magic. To save Fye's life, Kurogane makes a wish that turns Fye into a vampire. As a result, Fye must regularly drink Kurogane's blood to survive, creating an inescapable bond between them. This event causes Fye to drop his cheerful act, becoming colder and more solemn, and he begins calling Kurogane by his real name to create emotional distance. He also forms close bonds with Sakura and Syaoran, acting as a supportive and observant figure despite his attempts to remain detached. His relationship with his creator, King Ashura of Celes, is deeply tragic, as Ashura raised him but ultimately intended for Fye to kill him, a promise Fye could not fulfill, leading him to seal Ashura away instead.
Over the course of the story, Fye undergoes significant development. He begins as a man who has essentially given up on his own life, only fighting to protect others. His transformation into a vampire at Kurogane's will forces him to confront his own survival and his growing connections to the group. He must learn to accept his dependence on Kurogane and the fact that he has "crossed the line" he had drawn for himself, becoming too close to his companions. By the end of the series, he is able to return to a more cheerful demeanor, but this time his smile is more genuine, representing a true healing from his past wounds rather than just a mask.
As a mage, Fye is extremely powerful. His magic is said to reside in his blue eyes, which are the source of his abilities. He can create protective shields, levitate, launch powerful magical attacks, and can perform almost any type of spell except healing magic. He has an affinity for using whistling as a magical conduit, despite initially lying that he could not whistle. He was cursed to only be capable of learning magic that kills, which contributes to his reluctance to use his full power. To suppress this power and his curse, he wore a large phoenix tattoo on his back, which he later gave to the Dimension Witch as payment for a wish, vowing not to use his magic without it. After becoming a vampire, he gains enhanced speed, strength, durability, and the ability to extend his fingernails into sharp claws. Beyond combat, Fye is also an excellent cook, a skill he compares to mixing magical potions.
