Description
Sakura, often referred to as Princess Sakura, is the princess of the Kingdom of Clow, a peaceful realm where she lived under the care of her elder brother, King Tōya. Her life takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious force causes her memories, manifested as feather-like wings, to be scattered across countless parallel dimensions. This event leaves her in a catatonic, near-death state, as the feathers are not just memories but the very manifestation of her soul.

In her initial state, Sakura is kind, gentle, and somewhat shy, possessing the pure-hearted and innocent nature typical of a beloved princess. However, the trauma of losing her memories leaves her confused and perpetually tired at the beginning of her journey. As the quest to recover her feathers progresses, her personality evolves significantly. She grows stronger and more determined, moving from a passive figure who needs protection to an active agent in her own destiny. In a striking display of this newfound resolve, she once distances herself from her companions to pursue her own path toward salvation for the group, demonstrating a fierce independence and a willingness to risk everything for her goals. Her motivations are rooted in a deep, selfless love for her friends, driving her to take extreme measures to protect them from the tragic futures she sometimes foresees.

Her primary motivation is to recover all her lost feathers to regain her soul and memories, but this objective becomes intertwined with the well-being of her companions. A critical aspect of her journey is the price paid to the Dimensional Witch, Yūko Ichihara, for the ability to travel between worlds. The cost is Sakura’s most cherished possession: her memories of and relationship with her childhood friend, Syaoran. This means that even as she recovers other memories, she will never remember him or their past together. Despite this, she forms new, powerful bonds with her traveling companions, the ninja Kurogane, the magician Fai D. Flowright, and the creature Mokona, coming to regard them as a new family. Her relationship with Syaoran is the emotional core of the story; she repeatedly finds herself drawn to him and falls in love with him anew, even though she cannot remember their shared history.

Sakura’s role in the story is that of the catalyst for the entire journey, but she is far from a passive MacGuffin. As she regains her feathers, she unlocks a variety of notable abilities. She develops the power to see spirits of nature and ghosts, and she experiences prophetic visions of the future, often in her dreams, marking her as a dreamseer. These abilities become crucial to the plot, as her visions directly influence the actions she and her friends take.

A significant development in the narrative is the revelation regarding Sakura’s true nature. It is disclosed that the Sakura traveling with the group is not the original princess but a clone created by the sorcerer Fei-Wang Reed. The original Sakura, whose real name is later revealed to be Tsubasa, had her memories and soul copied to create this clone, who was designed to gather the scattered feathers to increase their power. This revelation adds layers of tragedy to her character, as she faces an existential crisis upon learning she is a copy. Nevertheless, her journey and the bonds she forms affirm her own identity and personhood. After her soul is destroyed and later recreated by Yūko, the clone Sakura is reborn as a true human. She and the clone Syaoran live a full life, even giving birth to the original Syaoran, thus completing a complex time loop that is central to the series' resolution.
