Description
Karin Sasamori is a heroine from the visual novel To Heart 2. She is a student in the same class and year as the protagonist, Takaaki Kouno, and her birthday is December 1st. She has a bright, cheerful, and highly eccentric personality, often acting on her boundless curiosity before thinking things through, which frequently leads to failure and mishaps. Despite her energetic and sometimes troublesome demeanor, she harbors a secret lack of confidence in her own unusual interests and personality, feeling that being different from others is a flaw.
Karin is the founder and sole initial member of a club she calls the Mystery Club, which is officially considered a less formal "circle" rather than an authorized school club. Her fascination is not with mystery novels or detective work but with the occult, supernatural phenomena, and unexplained mysteries such as UFOs and cryptids. To prevent her club from being disbanded, she uses a weakness she discovered in Takaaki to blackmail him into joining, forging his signature on an application form to make him a member. Throughout her story, she drags Takaaki along on various investigations and experiments, many of which go awry, including getting lost in the mountains and accidentally causing a fire in the science lab. These incidents lead her to believe she is a nuisance, but Takaaki's efforts to help her resolve the problems ultimately bring them closer together.
Karin's key relationship is with Takaaki, whom she affectionately calls "Taka-chan". Her interactions with him are central to her character development. Through their shared adventures and the troubles they cause, she begins to confront her self-doubt. She initially tries to change her personality to be more "normal" for his sake, finding the effort makes her feel even more unnatural. In the end, her arc focuses on self-acceptance and the realization that her unique perspective is not a flaw but a valuable part of who she is. Her development is also tied to her desire for genuine connection, as she secretly has a strong desire to monopolize Takaaki's attention, despite her outward attempts to seem carefree.
Karin has a very distinctive appearance, with short, golden-orange hair styled into two spiky pigtails and dark blue eyes. She often wears a small, pumpkin-shaped hair ornament on the right side of her head. She speaks in the third person frequently. She has a well-known and somewhat quirky love for egg sandwiches from the school canteen. She is also extremely curious and will investigate anything that catches her interest, once going so far as to mimic the protagonist's mother's voice to see his reaction. In spin-off titles like Dungeon Travelers, which re-imagines the characters in a fantasy RPG setting, Karin is depicted with abilities suited for a back-row fighter, such as a sniper or archer, often shown wielding a bow.
