Description
Bear Geki is the Bronze Saint charged with protecting the constellation Ursa Major, commonly known as the Great Bear. Physically, he is one of the most imposing of the Bronze Saints, standing at 188 centimeters tall and weighing 102 kilograms at the age of fifteen. His muscular build is a direct result of his intense training, which took place in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. To forge his body into a weapon and master his signature technique, he spent six years strangling hundreds of bears with his bare hands, a brutal regimen that granted him enormous physical strength even without the use of his Cosmo.
In his early appearances, Geki projects an air of confidence born from his harsh training. Despite his intimidating size and strength, he does not revel in violence or look down on those who are weaker. His personality is that of a strong but simple and good-hearted individual, a trait that becomes more pronounced as he matures. He is portrayed as a reliable ally who acts decisively when the situation demands it.
Geki is one of the one hundred orphans gathered by Mitsumasa Kido, making him a paternal half-brother to many of the other Saints. His primary role in the original story begins with the Galaxian Wars tournament, where he is chosen as one of the ten primary Bronze Saints to compete. In the first round of this tournament, he faces the protagonist, Pegasus Seiya. The match highlights his incredible grappling power; he manages to trap Seiya in his Hanging Bear technique, a powerful chokehold meant to crush the opponent's neck. However, Seiya overcomes him by destroying the arm sections of Geki's Bear Cloth at the atomic level with his Cosmo, breaking free and defeating Geki with a single powerful kick.
Following his defeat, Geki, along with several other Bronze Saints, returns to his master for further training. He later reappears during the battle of the Twelve Temples. While the main five Saints fight their way through the Sanctuary to save Athena, Geki, Jabu, Ichi, Nachi, and Ban arrive to protect the wounded goddess from foot soldiers. In the Asgard arc, he is swiftly defeated by the God Warrior Syd, and during the Hades arc, he demonstrates his enduring loyalty and courage by using his own body to shield Seiya’s sister, Seika, from an attack by the god of death, Thanatos.
His key relationships are primarily with his fellow Bronze Saints, with whom he shares a strong bond of camaraderie forged through the wars against the gods. He holds a particular respect for Pegasus Seiya, the one who defeated him. Years after the original wars, in the story of Saint Seiya Omega, Geki has retired from active duty as a Bronze Saint. He leaves his Bear Cloth behind and takes on a new role as a teacher at Palaestra, an academy dedicated to training the next generation of Saints. In this position, he is a strict but fair mentor, often seen enforcing the academy's rules but also encouraging students to follow their hearts. He is a long-time friend and comrade of the now-missing Sagittarius Seiya, and he often speaks of Seiya’s past to inspire new Saints like the young Pegasus Koga. During the war against the god Mars, Geki is captured and sealed in a crystal tower, but after being freed, he continues to fight. In the subsequent war against Pallas, he dons a custom-made Steel Cloth—a technologically enhanced armor—to return to the front lines and defend humanity.
Notably, in some continuations, Geki forges a strong friendship with Georges, another teacher at Palaestra. He also gains the respect of the Gold Saint Libra Genbu, who praises him for training such excellent Bronze Saints. His primary combat ability is his immense physical strength, which allows him to perform his only named technique, Hanging Bear (also known as Hanging Tackle or Big Tackle). This move involves trapping an opponent and using his overwhelming arm and upper body strength to strangle them into submission, a technique directly inspired by his training of wrestling wild bears.
