Description
The Caballero de Oro de Géminis, known as Saga, stands as one of the most pivotal and complex figures in the Sanctuary. He is a Gold Saint, the guardian of the Gemini Temple, and is consistently recognized by his peers as one of the most powerful Saints of his generation. Before his fall, Saga was a man of extraordinary benevolence, wisdom, and bravery, so admired throughout Greece that he was considered nearly divine by the people. His power and charisma made him a prime candidate to succeed the previous Pope, Shion of Aries.
However, Saga's defining characteristic is his profound dual nature, a literal split personality that manifests as an angel of good and a demon of evil. This internal conflict is visually represented by a change in his hair color, shifting from its normal blue to a pale grey or white when his malevolent side takes control. The origin of this darkness varied across adaptations, with some sources attributing it to an evil spirit that merged with him at birth, while others present it as an inherent part of his psyche amplified by the Gemini constellation. His evil side, born from ambition and resentment, craved power and the title of Pope, driving him to commit terrible acts.
Driven by this dark ambition, Saga murdered Pope Shion and assumed his identity, ruling the Sanctuary in secret for thirteen years. As the false Pope, he became the central antagonist of the Sanctuary arc, orchestrating the events that pitted the Bronze Saints against the twelve Gold Temples. His primary motivation was to eliminate the reincarnation of the goddess Athena and seize absolute control over the world. He attempted to murder the infant Athena with a golden dagger, but was thwarted by the Gold Saint Aiolos of Sagittarius, who rescued the goddess and sacrificed himself to ensure her survival. From the shadows, Saga manipulated allies and enemies alike, even using his mental abilities to control fellow Gold Saints like Aiolia of Leo.
Key relationships define his tragic story. His twin brother, Kanon, was the only one who initially knew of the evil within him and was imprisoned by Saga for trying to exploit it. His relationship with Aiolos was one of mutual respect before his fall; Aiolos even believed Saga deserved to be Pope, and their fates became tragically intertwined after the assassination attempt. Among the other Gold Saints, figures like Deathmask of Cancer knew of Saga's usurpation and chose to serve him, believing in a philosophy where justice is defined by the victor.
Saga's ultimate development arrives during the final battle of the Sanctuary arc. When the Bronze Saints, led by Pegasus Seiya, reach the Pope's chamber, he regains control and fights them with his full power. However, when Athena (Saori Kido) willingly takes a strike from his own golden dagger to prove her divinity and compassion, the good Saga finally overpowers his evil half. Overwhelmed by remorse for his years of treachery, he commits suicide by impaling himself on the trident of Athena's statue, dying in the arms of his goddess after asking for her forgiveness. This act of atonement resolves his internal war and redeems his soul, demonstrating that his core of goodness was always present, however deeply buried.
In terms of combat, Saga wields devastating techniques that reflect his immense cosmos. His signature attack is the Galaxian Explosion, which concentrates his energy into a blast comparable to the creation of a universe, powerful enough to destroy a cosmic area filled with stars. Another of his formidable powers is Another Dimension, which opens a spatial rift that banishes his opponents to a terrifying, inescapable void between dimensions. He also possesses the demonic Imperial Fist (Genrō Maōken), a mental attack that does not kill the target but instead takes complete control of their brain and will, causing them to follow his every command in torment. These abilities, combined with his tactical genius, solidify his legacy as a terrifying adversary and, after his redemption, a tragic hero of immense power.
