Description
Ikki de Fênix is the Bronze Saint of the Phoenix constellation and a central figure among the warriors who protect the goddess Athena. He is the older brother of Shun de Andrômeda, and their relationship is the most defining element of his character. As a child, Ikki and his infant brother were left to fend for themselves on the streets of Tokyo after the death of their mother. During this time, they were pursued by a mysterious girl named Pandora, who sought to use Shun as the earthly vessel for the god Hades. Ikki fiercely protected his brother, an act of tenacity that surprised Pandora and led her to leave Shun in his care. Eventually, the brothers were taken in by the Graude Foundation, a large orphanage secretly run by the wealthy Mitsumasa Kido. Unknown to them, Ikki, Shun, and the other orphans were all children of Kido, selected to be trained as Saints.

When the time came for each child to be sent to a training location by lottery, Shun was assigned to the Death Queen Island, a place considered a living hell. Determined to protect his weaker brother, Ikki aggressively volunteered to switch places, taking the deadly training ground for himself. On the island, he was trained by a cruel master named Guilty, who taught that hatred was the only true source of power. Despite the brutal conditions, Ikki found a measure of solace in Esmeralda, the kind-hearted daughter of his master, who became his first and only love. For his final trial, Guilty ordered Ikki to kill him. Unable to strike down his master out of respect, Ikki hesitated. Enraged by this perceived weakness, Guilty attacked, and Ikki narrowly dodged the fatal blow. However, the attack struck Esmeralda instead, killing her in Ikki’s arms. Blaming him for her death, Guilty’s cruelty finally ignited the hatred he had sought to instill. Consumed by rage and grief, Ikki killed his master and earned the Phoenix Cloth. He then defeated the leader of the Black Saints to claim the armor, after which the remaining Black Saints chose him as their new leader.

Driven by immense hatred for the suffering he endured, Ikki returns to Japan as a primary antagonist during the Galactic Tournament. He reveals that he and the other Bronze Saints are all half-brothers and, unable to take vengeance on their deceased father Mitsumasa Kido, he vows to destroy everything his father built, including the tournament and Saori Kido, the heiress to the foundation. Using the Black Saints as his army, he steals the Sagittarius Gold Cloth and battles the other Bronze Saints. After a series of intense fights, he is defeated by Seiya de Pegaso. Upon his defeat, he acknowledges his loss and reconciles with his brother and the other Saints. During a catastrophic earthquake, he is presumed dead, but survives and later re-emerges having cast aside his grudge, now fighting as a loyal, if distant, ally of Athena.

Ikki's personality is that of a quintessential lone wolf. He is cold, harsh, aggressive, and intensely solitary, preferring to operate far from his companions. This starkly contrasts with his gentle and emotional younger brother, Shun, whom he loves deeply despite his harsh exterior. Although he openly dislikes teamwork, he consistently arrives at the most critical moments—often to save Shun or his other allies from certain death—acting as the group’s secret weapon. Beneath his brutal and aloof demeanor lies a complex and noble spirit, driven not by hatred after his redemption, but by an unwavering loyalty to his brother, his friends, and Athena.

As the Phoenix Saint, Ikki's abilities are legendary and place him far above most other Bronze Saints, with power often rivaling that of Gold Saints. His signature ability is the resurrection of the Phoenix Cloth, which has the unique ability to regenerate itself from atoms when destroyed, becoming even stronger. In a symbolic reflection of his constellation, Ikki himself has demonstrated a similar capacity to rise from seemingly fatal defeats. His primary techniques include the Hō Yoku Ten Shō (Rising Phoenix Wing), a powerful physical attack, and the Genma Ken (Phoenix Genma Ken), an illusion attack that directly destroys the mind of his opponent. During the battle against Virgo Shaka, one of the most powerful Gold Saints, Ikki sacrificed his own senses to unleash his cosmos to its fullest, proving his power is equal to the highest rank of Saints. Due to his birth date under the astrological sign of Leo, he is later deemed worthy to don the Leo Gold Cloth, an honor that reflects his immense strength and connection to that constellation.
