Description
Jean Croce is a central figure in the Social Welfare Agency's Section 2, where he serves as both a field commander and a handler. He is the older brother of fellow handler Jose Croce and is assigned to care for and direct the cyborg assassin known as Rico.

Jean’s background is marked by profound tragedy, which shapes his entire worldview. Before joining the agency, he was a soldier in the 1st Carabinieri Parachute Battalion "Tuscania," a path that balanced his own desire for military valor with the expectations of his father, a prominent anti-terrorist prosecutor. A fleeting period of happiness came when he became engaged to a fellow soldier, Sophia Durante, who was one of the few people able to soften his naturally reserved demeanor. This happiness was brutally destroyed when a car bomb, planted by the terrorist Giacomo Dante of the Five Republics Faction, killed his parents, his younger sister Enrica, and Sophia. This event forged in him an all-consuming hatred for terrorism and a driving need for vengeance.

Personality-wise, Jean is best described as cold, ruthless, and intensely pragmatic. His desire for revenge defines his very being, and he is willing to torture enemies or sacrifice hostages to achieve his goals. This emotional detachment extends to his role as a handler. Unlike his brother Jose, who shows genuine care for his cyborg Henrietta, Jean views Rico primarily as a tool to be used in his crusade against terrorists. He enforces strict discipline, keeps Rico on heavy doses of conditioning to ensure obedience, and can be brutally harsh with her, even resorting to physical violence when she disobeys an order. He often refers to the girls as "cyborgs" to maintain an emotional barrier between them.

Despite his cold exterior, Jean's character shows subtle hints of development and hidden depth. His relationship with his brother Jose remains a point of connection, and he is shown to care for him deeply. Furthermore, despite his treatment of her, there are moments that suggest he is not entirely devoid of feeling for Rico. He saves her from drowning during a failed mission, and following the death of the cyborg Angelica, he embraces Rico in a rare moment of shared grief, realizing the preciousness of the girls they are responsible for. He also maintains a quiet rapport with the cyborg Claes, perhaps feeling a sense of responsibility or unspoken empathy for her status as a test subject.

Within the story, Jean holds a position of significant authority. He is the field commander of the handlers and a trusted, unofficial advisor to Director Lorenzo, the head of Section 2. His tactical acumen and extreme rationality make him a key asset for the agency. He is also manipulative when necessary, as seen when he convinces Victor Hilshire to join the SWA to protect the cyborg Triela. In terms of abilities, Jean is a highly capable combatant due to his military background. He is skilled in both firearms and hand-to-hand combat. While he is a leader who often directs operations from a strategic level, he participates directly in missions when needed, favoring weapons such as the Browning Hi-Power Mk-III pistol and the FN Five-seveN USG. His professional journey concludes with a promotion to chief of a government anti-terrorist division, a role that continues his lifelong campaign against the forces that destroyed his family.
