Description
Ginza Hibari is a 28-year-old police inspector serving in the special duties section of the New Metropolitan Center Police Station in Shinjuku. She was raised in a financially comfortable but emotionally cold family, circumstances that fostered a fiercely independent, individualistic, and competitive personality. Excelling academically and proving to be athletic, she developed a passion for action movies which led her to teach herself several martial arts and grappling techniques, eventually becoming an avid gun enthusiast. Her stated reason for joining the police force was the legal opportunity to fire a weapon. After easily passing the national civil service examination, she joined the career track of the National Police Agency but has been passed over for promotions due to her egocentric actions and, in part, her gender.
Ginza is characterized by a blunt, violent, and selfish demeanor, but she is also honest, making her more straightforward than she initially appears. She is a materialist who thinks in terms of money and possessions, having fully absorbed the capitalist values of her society. To maintain a lavish lifestyle in an upscale Tokyo apartment, she spends more time and effort on online stock trading than on her police duties, occasionally using her information-gathering position for insider trading. She has distinct preferences for Italian brand-name items, motorcycles, cars, and jewelry, and she maintains a personal collection of customized firearms, including one with a relief image of a golden Buddha on the barrel.
Despite her abrasive personality, Ginza is deeply committed to the people she cares about, particularly the freelance photographer Tatsumi Saiga. The two have had a physical relationship for approximately three years, during which she has provided him with classified information, bailed him out of jail, and lent him her own car. Their relationship is defined by an unconventional dynamic where Ginza seeks to maintain complete control, often using threats and playing rough games with handcuffs. This stems from her personality type, as she is fiercely possessive and will not rest until she gets what she wants. Her involvement in the story is driven by her pursuit of Saiga, whom she sees as a lover slipping away, particularly due to his mission to protect a teenage girl named Kagura. This creates a rivalry where Ginza views Kagura as a threat to her claim on Saiga.
Throughout the narrative, Ginza serves as a complex ally and occasional obstacle, using her skills and position as a police officer to navigate the dangerous underworld of the Six Houses Club. Her motivations are highly personal; she is not primarily driven by justice but by a desire to possess Saiga and keep him for herself. This leads her to make morally ambiguous decisions, such as striking a deal with Kagura's powerful mother. She is forced to confront the limits of her materialistic worldview as she contends with Saiga's fundamentally different values and his dedication to a cause that does not involve her. Her development sees her shifting from a self-serving and cynical figure to one who is genuinely vulnerable and desperate, ultimately taking direct action to reclaim her partner. Her notable abilities include her self-taught martial arts skills, her proficiency with a wide variety of firearms, and her intelligence, which she typically applies toward her own gain rather than her official duties.
